FIFA Soccer 06
Overall: FIFA 06 allows you to take an international team through a "season" in which you are invited to play "friendly" Matches, play qualification matches, and enter two ambiguous cup tournaments. You're main goal is to qualify for the world cup. Once that's done, you're season is over. Want to play the world cup? Tough, just take solace in the fact that you qualified and go to your local EB to preorder FIFA World Cup 06 from EA's money grubbing whores. This is a great soccer sim, but there is no excuse for its lack of depth. If I didn't know better, I'd think EA thought they could throw together a game based on a world famous sporting event, then laugh all the way to the bank.
Gameplay: The gameplay is some of the best soccer simulation I've ever seen. If you were just playing against another human opponent, this would be the only soccer game you'd ever need. (Except for the limited team choices, that is.) It plays that well. The format, however, is boring. You play a bunch of meaningless matches, thrown in with world cup qualification. You can't play the world cup. You can, however, play in a league style tournament or a knockout tournament. The passing dribbling, shooting, is perfect. You really have to know what you're doing to score a goal and when you do, it is sooooo worth the effort. The headers are world class. Once you know what you're doing, you'll be taking the ball to the corner, crossing it, and finishing the opportunity with a world class header into the back of the net. If you look at the way the AI controls its team, it does an incredible job of simulating what an actual team would do. The only problem with the gameplay is the format. You should be able to use any club team, any international team, play a league or world cup qualifying schedule, and play the world cup tournament. All you can do is qualify for the cup.
Graphics: The visuals are good, but not great. The HD makes the game look crisp and it looks stunning from a distance, but once you get up close and see the players faces, they look like wood. Visually, the game falls short of what the xbox 360 is capable.
Audio: The sound is fine, brilliant in fact. When you score or miss an opportunity, the most noticeable thing soundwise is the crowd reaction. If you are playing away and score, the resulting cheer is much less than it would be at home. During a penalty shootout, when it gets tense, the roar of the crowd is deafening. At least they got the sound right...
Suggestions: Next time you make a FIFA game, how about getting off your asses and putting some effort into it? Have all the teams and leagues available. Have the option to qualify for the world cup, but then be able to actually play it. Have a deeper game in general.
Overall Score: 8.0 / 10 Kameo: Elements of Power
Overall: Kameo is an elf princess whose jealous sister has aligned herself with trolls and imprisoned her family. Kameo must use a book called the wotnot book to gather the elemental warriors and use their powers to free her family. Eventually she will have to face Thorn (the troll king) and her sister. Rare really hit a home rum with Kameo: Elements of Power. It is one of the best launch titles released for the xbox 360.
Gameplay: Kameo?s power is her ability to use elemental warriors. There are ten elemental warriors who have different abilities. The elementals used are fire, water, rock, ice, and plant. There are two elemental warriors for each category. Each elemental warrior has been imprisoned inside a shadow troll. Shadow trolls reside in the shadow realm. There are entrances to the shadow realm in every level. They look like wells or manholes. There are sometimes bats flying around that lead you to the location of one of these entrances. The presence of bats is a sure sign that a shadow troll is around. Once inside the shadow realm, Kameo must use light energy from lost souls to defeat the shadow troll. Once the shadow troll is defeated, an elemental sprite is released. An elemental sprite is kind of a baby elemental warrior. The sprite enters Kameo and immediately grows into an elemental warrior. Kameo uses the abilities of these elemental warriors to defeat a variety of enemies and make her way through the levels to boss characters who usually are holding a member of her family. For example, Chilla is one of the elemental warriors Kameo will free. Chilla has the ability to throw ice spears. He also has the ability to swat enemies and smack enemies up into the air and impale them on the ice spikes on his back. Once they are impaled on his back, Chilla may use them as a club against other enemies or throw them like an ice spear. Like all elemental warriors, Chilla can gain advanced abilities by eating elemental fruit. Two key items in the game are elemental fruit and elixir of life. Elemental fruit are used to give elemental warriors advanced abilities. The elixir of life allows your health bar to permanently increase. These items are found hidden in levels throughout the game. They are also sometimes given to you as a reward for completing a task or side quest. They may also be purchased with runes. Runes are the money used in Kameo and they are found in chests, urns, or other containers throughout the game. Kameo frees her family members by defeating the bosses to levels throughout the game. When Kameo has freed all the elemental warriors from the shadow trolls and freed all of her family members held by the different boss characters, she will have to face her evil sister and the troll king, Thorn. The gameplay for the most part is very chronological. There's not a lot of wandering around you can do. You have some side quests, but they are always in the same level. In the main world, you might have to come back to finish a quest because you don't have the elemental warrior you need to do the job. The gameplay overall is one of the game's many strengths. Kameo: Elements of Power plays like a champion.
Graphics: The visual aspects of Kameo are nothing short of amazing. The environments are breathtakingly well done. The characters are crisp and created with exquisite detail. When viewed on an HDTV, the picture is so clear that it looks as if you could reach right into the screen and pluck different items right out of the game. The detail given to the elemental warriors and the boss characters are particularly impressive. Rare really outdid themselves visually.
Audio: The music that accompanies the game is extremely well done. I found myself whistling one of the tunes at work and a coworker asked me if it was from Lord of the Rings. He was pretty surprised when I told him it was from a video game. The sound effects are nicely done as well. You can actually hear activity going on behind you through the rear speakers, so 5.1 is done right on this game. The soundtrack is worthy of a major motion picture and really gets you into the spirit of the game.
Suggestions: This is a really complete game. The only suggestion I can make is perhaps a battle mode for xbox live. I think using the different elemental warriors to fight other gamers on xbox live would give the game a whole new level of replay value. Also, a little note: Fire beats ice. When you have elemental warriors, water shouldn't fight water, ice shouldn't fight ice. Fire beats ice, water beats fire, etc, etc.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Perfect Dark Zero
Overall: I expected more from this game than it delivered. I thought it was going to be the shooter to play online until Halo 3 is released. It's not. It's still a good game, but it's not my first choice unless I've really got some time to kill. Online/multiplayer are definately better than the campagn mode, but they are two very different games. Overall I guess I'm not terribly impressed, but that could be because I set the bar too high in my personal expectations.
Gameplay: The gameplay is decent. The controls are easy to manage and not hard to learn. It seems that there are two entirely different games in PDZ. The campaign mode is kind of fun, but it didn't get my juices flowing like Halo 2 did. The focus of the campaign mode is tactics and stealth. You do a lot of sneaking around. The focus of multiplayer is just all out mayhem. Kill everybody. I like that in a game. One thing that really diminishes the worth of PDZ is the melee attacks. I don't know if I'm just bad at it or slow, but whenever I try the melee attack, it seems like it's delivered late. It could just be my own shortcoming, but I don't think it is because in other games my melee style is one of my strengths. It sure isn't in PDZ, though, so I think it's a problem with the game. PDZ is fun both in campaign mode and online, but it just feels like it's missing something.
Graphics: The visuals are breathtakind, nothing short of stunning. The player models are very realistic. The envirenments are really well done. These may be some of the best visual effects made on a console game so far.
Audio: The sound is perfect. 5.1 rocks. It must be something about the system power, but I have yet to play a game on the 360 that hasn't blown me away with the audio. PDZ is no different. The sound is really well done, especially on a 5.1 surround sound receiver.
Suggestions: Spice it up a little to make it more interesting. Put some twists in the storyline or something. You could even take a shortcut and throw some nudity in there. Hellm it's already rated M. Anything to give it whatever it is that it's missing to make it a system seller.
Overall Score: 8.0 / 10 Madden NFL 06
Overall: Madden is the standard for the next generation of football games. The game overall will have a familiar control scheme to anyone who's played Madden on earlier consoles, but the game itself is actually very different. I actually bought Madden 06 for the xbox to get used to playing it on the 360. The 360 version is a different animal that will take a little time before getting used to it. It's not a very deep game. I couldn't even find an online franchise mode or league mode. It does come with a thirty year franchise moded which is nice if you have the time. Stat tracking is hard to find at first, but is much improved. Madden provides stats for pretty much anything you could want. It might just be me,but it seems like this game was slapped together in order for it to be released at lauch. I think EA could have done a much better job if they had chosen to do so. They've been mailing it in on their sports titles for years. If you are going to buy the license to be the only football game allowed to have accurate NFL information, you should hold yourself to a higher standard and make a game that leaves no question that it is the best football game made for the 360. Although Madden falls shor of this, it is still fun to play, especially online.
Gameplay: The gameplay is generally the same as all the Madden games before it, but improved once you get used to the controls. The player movements are very realistic. The view from the line is really too close until you hit the trigger to back away, then it's too far away. It's best to play in the zoomed out mode because you can see most of the field, but the players are a little small and hard to see. The passing game is well done, realistic and fun. The running game is excellent once you get used to the controls. Some running plays work one time and are squashed at the line the next for no apparent reason. It's not like a guy missed a block and that caused the play to tank. It's kind of like random chance determine's the outcome or something. The defensive side of the ball is fun to play. You can lay some monster hits with the hit stick. The one huge control change is that they made A the strip ball button and the right trigger the sprint button. These changes are for the better once you get used to it.
Graphics: Visually, I was expecting something more. The opening movie sequence looks ridiculously good, but you don't see quite that level of quality in game. It could be because you have to play zoomed out to see the whole field and just can't make out the players as well. The stadiums look perfect. The coach models are really improved from other versions. Andy Reid doesn't just looks similar to the real Andy Reid, he IS Andy Reid. While the visuals don't measure up to what I thought they should, they are still pretty !&%$@#* good.
Audio: The sound is perfect. I kind of question going with an unknown radio announcer, but it seems to work all right. I'm one of the minority who liked Madden's commentary. The in game sound is stellar, especially if you have 5.1. Hearing sounds that actually depict what is going on behind you is priceless. The soundtrack is excellent. Overall, the sound is stellar.
Suggestions: Put in online leagues and online franchise. It's a !&%$@#* shame that 2006 didn't contain this feature. That would have given it endless replay value. Figure out a way to let the improvements made in the player models shine. It's no good if you can't see them well during the course of the game. Also, wide screen should enable you to see the whole field, not almost the whole field, but the whole field.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 Xbox 360 Video Game System
Overall: I?m not sure where to start with this one. When I finally hooked up my 360, I was a little nervous about the changes that Microsoft was making on xbox live and with the dashboard. Setting up this puppy put my fears to rest. Actual setup required nothing more than taking the xbox out of the entertainment center and putting the 360 there in its place, then turning it on. The instructions were ridiculously easy to follow, I?m pretty sure a chimp out of the jungle could do it. The changes made to live and to the dashboard were an incredible improvement. I thought they were fine the way they were, but now I could never go back. Transferring my gamertags over to the 360 was painless and took practically no time at all. I am really impressed with the management system Microsoft has given us with this console.
The appearance of the 360 is definitely another strength. I liked my old black box and wasn?t sure about how the new lighter ?chill? color would look, but Microsoft pulled this one off nicely. I would have liked it better if the DVD tray was gray instead of silver, but I can live with it. The ring of light is an attractive feature and a clever way to help gamers manage their wireless controllers. The shape is really nice, actually pretty sweet. The power brick isn?t much to look at, but it stays behind the entertainment stand. No harm, no foul. In general, though, the appearance rocks and just reeks of coolness.
The power supply is huge, but easily managed if you set it up right. The best way is probably to put it in a very well ventilated area behind the entertainment center (yes, they do exist if you look hard for them.) and run the power cord in to your 360. The unit is loud, but after you play for half an hour you won?t notice, especially if you hooked it up to a surround sound receiver. The cooling mechanisms are apparently of a high quality. I?ve played this thing a ridiculous amount of time without the slightest issue. I?m thinking all the ?overheating issues? we are hearing about consist mainly of people not setting up their 360s in well ventilated areas. The power this technological wonder puts out generates heat and has safe measures in place to deal with this heat, but if you don?t follow the instructions that say ?place in a well ventilated area? you will most likely have some problems. The cords and remote that were included were high quality. I?m still going to get the monster cables and the Logitech remote because they are better, but the ones included were of unprecedented quality to be included ?in the box?. Microsoft deserves some love for including items of this quality instead of the cheap, bargain basement crap that usually comes with consoles.
Wireless controllers? I was a little concerned about this too. Would they work? Would they feel funny? They are simply amazing. These are definitely the best controllers designed in the history of gaming?ever. When you hold them, you can tell how well they are made. The buttons are easily managed and they are perfectly balanced. I?ve had no issues whatsoever with the 360 getting the message my fingers send it. (This was my main concern.) Even when I put the coffee table close to the entertainment center to keep my son from pushing buttons, the signal remains strong and crisp. The ability to manage your console from a remote, wireless controller is an early Christmas present from Microsoft to gamers everywhere. The control/networking scheme used between the controllers and console is perfect.
After playing the 360, I have just been astonished at its abilities. The games look like no games have ever looked. The abilities of the 360 just floor me. It puts the next in next generation. I can?t really think of a single flaw. I was going to bash the cooling system, but I can?t because it is a very well designed system that works well. I thought the power supply was a weakness, but it turned out to be a non-issue. Overall, this is the best console ever made. It may well rule the gaming world for the next half decade.
Suggestions: I'm so blown away by the excellence of this game system that I cannot think of a single suggestion. Every concern I have had has been put to rest by the 360's performance. Make it blue? Give us colored controllers? Who cares. Just keep up the excellent work.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Dragon’s Lair 3D: Return to the Lair
Overall: A new twist on an old classic is one way to describe this game. If you loved the old arcade classic, you'll love this one. The big twist is that this time you are actually able to control Dirk, the bumbling hero. This one is a keeper.
Gameplay: The gameplay is different than the original in that you control Dirk's every move. The controls are somewhat stiff, but not too bad. The view can be annoying, but that's the way most 3D games are. Still, being able to control the hero in this version renders these minor annoyances moot. The gameplay is solid.
Graphics: The visuals are better than ever. The old scenes drawn by Bluth are still there along with a lot of new rooms, over 200 to be exact. The cel shading is dynamic, really beautiful. The visuals couldn't be better.
Audio: The developers spent a lot of time on the sound and it shows. A major musical score was written which would rival the score of any movie now in theaters. The music changes with the environment and really gets you into the mood of what's going on in the game.
Suggestions: I can't imagine any improvements unless the control scheme can be tweaked. This one will keep me playing for a long time.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
Overall: This is by far the best game ever released for the xbox. Splinter Cell even beats Halo by more than a nose. You can get lost in Sam Fisher's world if you are not careful. The time flys by when you play Splinter Cell, one of the key indicators as to whether or not you're having fun. I bought this game on a whim, but I am so glad I did. Being able to download content from xbox live is a big plus as well. I'll say it again, best game for xbox ever at this point.
Gameplay: The gameplay is incredible. The training session is vital to get Sam Fisher's moves down. The guy has so many abilities that you can use it's crazy. The gameplay is perfect.
Graphics: The visual effects are almost as perfect as they can be. I don't think that they could get much better.
Audio: The sound is as good as it gets. You can hear every little thing as if you are actually in the environment. The sound is practically perfect.
Suggestions: Sequel. Multiplayer mode would be cool if you could pull it off.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
Overall: This is one of the best games I've played on xbox and xbox live. It is insane. There isn't anything more fun than hooking up with some buddies and shooting each other to pieces. The single player is fun enough, but the multiplayer is the most fun you can have on xbox live at this time. Perfect.
Gameplay: The single player mode is fun and has three different levels of difficulty, recruit, veteran, and elite. Recruit is pretty easy, veteran is harder, but elite is crazy hard. There is a ton of stuff to unlock, soldiers, weapons, maos, and game modes. There are a variety of weapons specialists to choose from. The best feature of this game, however, is online play. I can't stress enough how much fun the online multiplayer mode is. It is the major appeal of the gameplay.
Graphics: The visuals of this game aren't stunning, but they are pretty !&%$@#* good. I looked through the scope and saw a russian soldiers face. It looked pretty realistic to me. I think the visuals could be a little better, but overall...I'm happy.
Audio: The sound of this game is incredible. The sounds of war are very realistic. An explosion near you renders you deaf for a moment. You actually feel like you can't hear. The menu music is pretty good as well. I have no complaints about the sound.
Suggestions: Improve the graphics a little and add a level to kill Arabs.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Overall: This game is going to make a fortune. It plays as a lost episode from between seasons 2 and 3. You kind of have to have watched the show to get the way the characters relate to each other. The good news is if you aren't a fan of the show you will still totally enjoy this game. It is that good. The appeal will vary, though, depending on if you are a fan of the show or not. If you aren't a fan of the show, this game will be one that you should definately buy and you will enjoy it immensely. If you are a fan of the show, this game is a must have and it will be one of your favorite games if not your favorite game. The developers got everything perfect, with the small exception of Willow's face. All the faces of all the other characters are perfectly rendered. The storyline is just like one of the shows on television. The environments are spooky, but very familiar to Buffy fans. All the details have been covered to deliver an almost perfect Buffy experience.
Gameplay: The gameplay is as good as it gets. The combat takes just a little getting used to. The cool thing about the combat that makes the game more interesting is that if you use the same moves over and over a lot, the enemies will learn your style and will block your attacks if you do not vary them. Staking vampires is fun, not too difficult, and looks as good as it does on the show. A big plus is being able to get stakes by breaking wood. The ability to stake a vampire that is behind you is also an added bonus, not to mention looks very cool. The crossbow takes some getting used to, but the sniper zoom is a big help since only the heart counts. The ability to knock or throw vampires into pointy objects that dust them is a lifesaver, especially if you are out of stakes. Last but not least, slayer power moves add a lot to the fun factor of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There is so much cool gameplay that I'm sure that I'm leaving something out, but the game play, as I said, is as good as it gets.
Graphics: The visuals are almost perfect. The only visual shortcoming of the whole game is Willow's face. Alyson Hannigan looks MUCH better than that and it looks kind of dark. All the other faces are perfectly rendered. The environments and enemies are well done and are very familiar to fans of the show. The environments look as real as they do on the television. The high school, the old Spanish Mission, the graveyard are all included and look amazing. The visuals could not get any better if not for the one flaw in the rendering of Willow's face.
Audio: The sounds are incredible. Dolby Digital never sounded so good. The music is as good as it gets and really gets you into the mood of the game. The fact that all but one of the characters have voice overs done by the actual actors is a major plus. Giles sounds like Giles, Spike sounds like Spike, and so on. The only flaw is that the voice of Buffy isn't done by Sarah Michelle Gellar. The girl who does Buffy's voice, however, does an excellent job and you really can't tell the difference. All in all, the sound is perfect.
Suggestions: Fix Willow's face and make a sequel. You could make a FORTUNE on this game if you kept producing sequels that are as well done as this one. Props to EA for finally not making a port for xbox, but I guess Fox Interactive should get the credit for that.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Madden NFL 2003
Overall: Madden has always been the best video football simulation on the market. It still is. The simulated statistics in the Madden series have always been as close to perfect as they can be. This is an area in which Madden 2003 doesn't disappoint. Most of the traits for which the Madden series is famous are included and improved in Madden 2003. One GLARING omission is the fact that Electronic Arts, in their infinite wisdom, chose to not make Madden 2003 compatable with xbox live. This has to be the biggest screw up in the long, sad history of screw ups and one that Electronic Arts probably won't have the good sense to regret. Still, Madden 2003, although it falls far short of what it could be, remains the best professional football simulation on the market.
Gameplay: The gameplay in Madden 2003 is as strong as ever. The offense, the running game, and the passing game, are perfect. Defense is a pleasure to play. I especially like the control of the defensive backs when defending passes. The special teams modes are accurately represented and the kicking game is fun. The franchise mode is just mindblowing. The statistic tracking is almost perfect. The only thing keeping this from being the best football game ever made is the omission of online play via xbox live. Someone at Electronic Arts must have decided that supporting Sony was more important than making money. Look up there next to my name. You see that little picture with NFL 2K3 league on it? If Electronic Arts had included online play via xbox live, that little picture would read "Madden 2003 league." All of the greatness that Madden 2003 could have achieved is undercut by that one inexplicably STUPID move. Electronic Arts was 100 yards from the summit of the MT. Everest of the gaming world, but failed to reach the summit due to their own stupidity.
Graphics: The visual appeal is as good as can be expected, for a port. Yet again, Electronic Arts has neglected to take advantage of the capabilities of the xbox. Instead of being designed from the ground up specifically for the xbox, Electronic Arts chooses to take the easy way out and just port it over. That's fine, because the game still looks pretty freaking good. However, it falls far short of what it could be. For that reason, and that reason alone, Madden 2003 takes a backseat to NFL Fever 2003 and NFL 2K3 in the area of visual appeal. It's really pretty sad that a company that produces such great games can be that !&%$@#* lazy. The graphics are not as good as they could be, but they are still way above average.
Audio: The biggest area of imporvement in Madden 2003 can be found in the area of sound. I have a lot of respect for Mr. Pat Summerall. He was a great football player and is a wonderful human being. I kept Madden 2002 soley because his voice is on it. I hear a lot of people complaining about him, but in reality he was one of the greatest commentators that ever lived. That being said, I was really pleased with the chemistry that exists between Al Michaels and John Madden in Madden 2003. The new commentary is excellent. The soundtrack, if your into that, is full of good music. I don't care because that's now why I bought the game. The sound effects on the field and the crowd noise are both excellent.
Suggestions: Add xbox live compatabilty and design Madden 2004 with the capabilities of the xbox in mind. If possible, somehow fix it this year so that Madden 2003 may be played on xbox live. And here's a thought, try to get your nose out of Sony's ass. It is pretty low that you chose to support Sony's pathetic excuse for an online unplan and not Microsoft's. And yes, I read the interview in which your representative said that Microsoft, "really hasn't given us the details of what their service will look like." Bull schit. Microsoft has the best online ideology ever created for console gaming and they furnished all the developers with the protocols. I also read the comment that dealt with Microsoft being confused over whose customers are whose. Just to be clear, PS2 owners and Xbox owners are Sony's customers and Microsoft's customers first. That's why they call you guys a third party developer. If anyone is confused as to whose customers are whose, it is not Microsoft, it is Electronic Arts. For example, this year, due to your unbelievablely shameless decision to support Sony's online unplan over xbox live, I was forced to buy Sega's NFL 2K3. It turns out I had enough cash and was pissed off enough at the "threatening to strike" baseball players that I was able to trade World Series Baseball for 25 bucks in-store credit and buy Madden 2003. If I hadn't had that set of foruitous cir !&%$@#* stances, there would be 50 dollars less in your coffers. It turns out that NFL 2K3 is a great game, not all that far behind Madden 2003. My point is, your game was OPTIONAL this year for one reason which I have stated multiple times. Whose customer am I? EA's? Sega's? No, I am Microsoft's customer, because I play EA's software and Sega's software on Microsoft's console, without which there would be no buying of either party's software. If I'm stuck playing NFL 2K3 on xbox due to the lack of support Electronic Arts gives the xbox, I can learn to live with it.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 NFL 2K3
Overall: In all honesty, I only bought this game because of one characteristic. It is xbox live enabled. That alone is worth the money. The big video football battle Sega wages with EA Sports every year got a lot closer this year.
Gameplay: The gameplay of NFL 2K3 is very good, but still could stand some improvement. THe running game is one example. It is great that you are able to follow your blockers, but running is tedious when you have to stiff arm or juke to get anywhere. The passing game is not as good as the running game. The maximum passing and regular passing are a little ridiculous. The dart and lob passes are not enough choices in the manner in which you choose to throw the ball. The playcalling system could use a lot of work, as well as additional plays. The choices for how you run with the ball leave a lot to be desired as well. For instance, to get a speed burst, you have to tap the A button like some kind of inbred moron on crack. Just holding the A button down would be a much better option. The kicking game could also use a little work. The wind effects the ball just as it is kicked, instead of at the end of the kick like real wind would do. The stats are pretty good, but leave out some things that should definately be mandantory. For example, defensive touchdowns scored by defensive playrs should definately be included, but they are missing. Why? Still, after all this criticism, this is one fun game to play. The defense is especially fun to play. I almost look forward to playing defense. Then there is the big equalizer, the xbox live compatabilty of which Electronic Arts, in its infinite wisdom, neglected to take advantage. This one little trait is enough to push NFL 2K3 to the top of the video football heap. I've played alone while talking to a friend on instant messenger as he played his game, and just that experience is a lot more fun than playing alone. I can't imagine how much fun we are going to have when we can actually play any gamer who wants a piece on xbox live.
Graphics: The visual appeal of NFL 2K3 is not quite as high as I thought it would be for one reason. Whenever a lineman leans left or right, he reminds me of one of the zombies in Hunter: The Reckoning. It is really inexcusable to make football players look so zombielike. The ESPN license has given this series a wonderful makeover, but is a bit overwhelming. I'd like more NFL, less ESPN. That being said, the stadiums look wonderful, the player animations leave almost nothing to be desired, and the game couldn't look much better.
Audio: The sound is more than accepable. The weather effects sound great in 5.1, as do the crowds. You really feel like you are in the middle of an NFL stadium when you here those crowds. The announcers commentary is marginal. Furthermoe, it gets quite repetitive. I get tired of hearing all the skills described as "you just can't coach that." The commentary, therefore, would benefit from some improvement. Overall, the sound is way above average, but not quite superior.
Suggestions: Please fix the characteristics that I critiqued above. Add an online league mode. You really improved the level of the nfl 2k series with this game.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 NFL Fever 2003
Overall: I rented Fever 2003 just to make sure that I wasn't wrong when I said that it would suck. If I was wrong I was fully prepared to take NFL 2K3 back and trade it in for Fever 2003. I wasted three hours of my life playing this game in the hope that it might be more than I thought it would be. It wasn't. It isn't much better than the 2002 version that I took back and traded for Madden.
Gameplay: If you like football arcade games, such as NFL Blitz or Tecmo Bowl, then you will like Fever's gameplay. If you like football simulations, you won't like Fever's gameplay at all. The passing game is atrocious. The computer AI lobs passes that look like wounded ducks, yet end up in the hands of a receiver in hte end zone. If you try this tactic, you are rewarded with an interception. The running game leaves a lot to be desired. There just isn't too much too it. The defensive AI is suspect, especially the defensive backs. To make a long story short, Fever 2003's gameplay has a lot of problems, more than I ever thought it would.
Graphics: The visual appeal is Fever 2003's only strength. The player models look good and the graphics are very crisp. However, the visuals get boring because they are repetitive. It took a while to figure that out. It looked great, but wasn;t too impressive. I finally thought, "Oh that's it. It isn't impresive because it's the same thing over and over. When it's all said and done, pretty is as pretty does, and Fever's pretty graphics can't save the game.
Audio: I expected a LOT better sound than Fever 2003 had to offer. The commentary by the broadcasters is pathetic. The music is unimpressive and the sound effects are ineffective at best, horrible at worst. The sound does not add to the appeal of Fever 2003.
Suggestions: I have too many suggestions to really feasably list here. There is one thing that comes to mind, though. If you want to compete with Madden and NFL 2K3, you have to get away from the arcadey style of video football. If not, you need to compete with NFL Blitz instead by adding lots of different animations and effects. If you want to compete with the other two, buy the games, play them, and take notes.
Overall Score: 2.0 / 10 NCAA Football 2003
Overall: NCAA 2003 is by far the best college football game ever created. I've had some issues with Electronic Arts and their somewhat lukewarm support of the xbox, but this game almost makes up for their lack of effort. There is so much detail in NCAA Football 2003, from the fight songs to the Bowl coalition points. The Dynasty mode gives you literally years of gameplay. If not for roster changes and such, this would be the last college football game I would ever buy because it would last forever.
Gameplay: The gameplay is sweet. It took a little time to get used to the controls, but now they feel like second nature. The difficulty levels are perfect. The game isn't impossible to play at the hardest level, but it isn't too easy either. The option and other forms of running are much improved. Once you learn how to follow the blocker and hit the right hole, you'll be running at will. The passing game is as perfect as I've ever seen. I'm really glad that the receivers will make an effort to get a foot down if possible instead of just making a normal catch out of bounds. The Dynasty mode, as I previously stated, gives you years of gameplay. I have noticed some slowdown on goalline offense, but it is minimal. The ability to have a mascot game will appeal to some for a change of pace. This could be the last football game a gamer buys, if not for the neccessary roster changes and occassional slowdown. You really cannot ask to much more from EA in terms of gameplay. Oh yeah, there is one little thing...ONLINE PLAY! It is really inexcusable that EA doesn't support xbox live. Think of the options if that were available...online leagues and bowl games. The endless possibilities boggle the mind...
Graphics: Although the visual appeal of NCAA 2003 is pretty good, I still found it somewhat lacking and I'll tell you why. As good as the game looks, it only looks a little better than the PS2 version. The xbox is capable of making this game look much better if only EA would make the freakin effort. Sad lack of effort on their part.
Audio: The sound of NCAA 2003 is excellent. Thank the powers that be at EA for at least adding the Dolby 5.1 support. The commentary gets a little stale after a while ,but it is still pretty good commentary. The fight songs are accurate and sound great. The sound effects on hte field are off the hook. The sound couldn't be much better, except for one major glitch. The weather effects do not work in 5.1. In Madden 2002, when it rained, you heard it all around you in all 5 speakers. In NCAA 2003, you hear it in just the center speaker. This is really unacceptable. I mean, how hard would that have been to fix?
Suggestions: Fix the 5.1 so the rain can be heard all around you. Add online play and xbox live support. Somehow make it easier to add the player names instead of their numbers. I know it is an amateur sport and all, but I bet every NCAA player out there would sign a waiver for his name to appear on a video game. Add online play and xbox live support.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Outlaw Golf
Overall: I had no intention of buying Outlaw Golf. I bought three games in a package deal and it was one of them. I originally planned to trade it for Enclave at Wal Mart, but my wife asked me to at least play it before I traded it. I am so glad she did. Although I've only played real golf a couple of times, computer golf is pretty fun in general. Outlaw Golf takes the fun to a whole new level. This one is a keeper.
Gameplay: Outlaw golf has a number of play options. You can choose from a number of different games, but only three courses. The manner in which you actually play golf is ingeniously replicated in Outlaw Golf. Using the right triger to swing gives you the actual feel of a golf swing. Playing the ball from the fairway or the rough is appropriately simulated, as is putting. The blueprint or layout that you receive on the green from pressing the white buton is very helpful and will enhance your ability to putt the ball. The different clubs and equipment make for a nice touch, although they add a whole new level of difficulty to the game as you have to learn how to use the differnet clubs. The characters from which you choose are all pretty unique. The one shortcoming in Outlaw Golf is that there isn't one semi normal character to choose. I for one am sick of mascots with attitudes and characters with problems. Give me a couple of normal people please. All in all Outlaw Golf is a solid golf game.
Graphics: Outlaw Golf looks pretty !&%$@#* good. I would go so far as to say that it is the best looking golf game currently available for the xbox. The visuals are that stunning. The golf courses look immaculate. Outlaw Golf could not be improved much visually.
Audio: The sound is almost perfect. The commentary gets kind of annoying after a while, but the different funny things the characters say almost make up for it. The sound is close enough to perfect to rate a 5.
Suggestions: As I stated earlier, I'm sick of mascots with attitudes and characters with problems. Who thought this stuff up? Why not give us a Harvard graduate who was kicked off his counrty club for boinking the president's wife? That guy is more normal, yet still has that something (problem) that the video game industy loves to incorporate into games. It's just more something I can identify with. I can't really identify with a guy that got released from prison on a technicality, but I can identify with a guy who was doing something a little less heinous. Think Jay and Silent Bob type characters. Oh yeah, and add more courses.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 Legends of Wrestling
Overall: Legends of Wrestling does a great job of making you feel like you are in an old school environment. I watched Ric Flair beat Buddy Landell senseless in Greenville when I was a kid. I also saw him steal one from Kruscher Krushcev in my college gym. When I first popped in Legends of Wrestling, I got that old school feel that I felt at those matches. It kind of enamored me to the game just to feel those old feelings. I especially like the regional set up, where you start out fighting in one region until you win the title and defend it a couple of times. I liked the game more than I thought I would. Still, there are a lot of "legends" missing from the game.
Gameplay: The gameplay is nothing to write home about, yet it kept me playing for about eight hours, even after my friend stopped and went to bed. The moves aren't hard to pull off, but I have to confess I didn't manage to pull off all the available, yet limited, moves. The highlight was hitting the 5 star frog splash with RVD. One thing that adds a full .5 to the gameplay is the endless supply of weapons found beneath the ring and how easy they are to use. Overall, the gameplay is pretty basic and the moves are pretty limited.
Graphics: The visual appeal leaves a lot to be dedired. THe wrestlers look like badly drawn cartoons and are not anything like real life. I will say that the developers did a good job of capturing that "thick" look wrestlers have, they just overdid it a little. One thing I REALLY liked about the visuals was that after the match, you can tell how bad you destroyed the other guy by the damage on his face. Another thing that this wrestling game has that others need is blood. Still, I found the visuals sorely lacking.
Audio: I didn't really notice the sound. The announcer sounds old school, but he only talks before the match. The in game music must not be too bad, because I didn't notice it. However, it can't be that great for the same reason. The sound could be improved a great deal.
Suggestions: I felt like my score was a little high, but I enjoyed the time I spent playing the game. However, I wouldn't go out of my way to play it either. It needs more matches, modes, and wrestlers. The entire game needs to be reworked graphically if you plan on competing with the big boys.
Overall Score: 6.0 / 10 World Series Baseball (Sega)
Overall: Although I've rented both Triple Play and WSB, I've not had a lot of money to buy a baseball game. I was pretty happy to arrive at a good friend's house to play some xbox to find a brand new copy of WSB, which in my opinion is the best baseball game on the xbox. After a marathon session of WSB, there is no doubt that this is THE baseball game on the xbox. Is it that good or are all the other games that bad? I think it's a little of both, but WSB is good enough to claim the xbox baseball title.
Gameplay: The gameplay is a little complex, but very accurate in terms of realism. Home runs aren't too easy to hit, but they aren't that easy to hit in real life either. The pitching and hitting is accurate, as far as difficulty is concerned. You can't just press a button over and over and expect to get hits. You have to think, just like in real baseball. The gameplay isn't easy, but it is real, and that's its strength.
Graphics: World Series Baseball is by far the best looking baseball game on the xbox. That exclusivity pays off. No other console can handle these graphics. The stadiums are good, but some key stadium features are left out. Little things like the home run animations of the different parks. It's just a little thing, but God is in the details.
Audio: THe sound is amazing. Dolby 5.1...there is no substitute. If you close your eyes while playing World Series Baseball, you will think you're in a stadium. The commentary is better than most baseball games, but still leaves a little to be desired.
Suggestions: Pay closer attention to the details. They make the difference between a great game and a legend.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 Fifa World Cup 2002
Overall: The overall appeal of 2002 FIFA World Cup is that it is the only official world cup game on the xbox. If you love soccer, you need to purchase this game. I bought it on a whim after staying up all night to see the US hand Portugal their !&%$@#* and I am glad I did. It might be the only way you ever see the US, although I personally like their chances this year, win the world cup. That is if you choose to use them. As fun as the game is, it has one glaring problem, the number of teams available is not nearly adequate. The ability to shake the groups up would also give the game more replay valuable.
Gameplay: The gameplay is extremely fun if you like soccer. If you don't like soccer you probably aren't interested in this game anyway. The shot meter and pass meter take some getting used to, as does the airball play. FIFA has some interesting features regarding airballs, in that you can charge up the meter to hit a hellacious shot while the ball is on its way to you in the air.
Graphics: The visual appeals leave a lot to be desired. The players look generally like their real life counterparts, but the textures are grainy and not very well done at all. This is obviously a port and not a very good one.
Audio: The sound is great, especially when you score a goal. If you have surround sound it really sounds like you are in the middle of a stadium. The music is well done, although the orchestra is not really done to my tastes in music. The commentary is pretty good and rarely boring.
Suggestions: If you can make a FIFA 2002 for PS2, PC, and Gamecube, that has every team in the world to choose from, you can make the World Cup game have more teams. I mean, it gets a bit ridiculous when you include Israel, a team that rarely wins a match, and leave out Holland, a perrenial world soccer power. This is a poorly done port (visually) that you used to try to make a quick buck. Upgrade the game for the xbox graphically and ADD MORE TEAMS! Also add the ability to shake up the groups so if I use the US I'm not stuck playing Portugal, South Korea and Poland all the time.
Overall Score: 8.0 / 10 Elder Scrolls III : Morrowind
Overall: Morrowind is an incredible RPG that will give you almost infinite gameplay. There is so much that you can do in Morrowind, you could literally play it nonstop for months and still have plenty of things to do. Bethesda really hit a home run with this one.
Gameplay: One of the biggest strengths of the gameplay is that you can play as many different kinds of characters. There are several races to choose from and even more choices regarding the class of character you create. If you don't like any of the choices, you can create your own. The quests start of pretty easy and get harder as your character develops. The combat starts out pretty hard and gets easier over time, but the manner of enemy you face gets more difficult as well. All in all, the gameplay is better than most rpgs that I have played.
Graphics: The visuals are one of Morrowinds strengths, and one of its weaknesses. The game looks pretty good, better than most games, in fact. However, it makes one wonder how much of the xbox's capabilities were utilized in making this game. There is some slowdown and a few frame rate issues in parts of Morrowind. I feel that if a game takes this long to develop, it should be done right. Morrowind is pretty well done visually, but not near as good as it should have been.
Audio: The sound is pretty much perfect. The rain and water sound great. The animal sounds are good and will at times give you chills. When you enter dungeons you hear some ungodly noises that make you consider casting or taking every strength/vitality spell or potion that you have available. The sound, especially if you have a 5.1 receiver, is perfect.
Suggestions: Tweak the graphics and fix the framerate problems. Change the fighting style a bit so that you can maybe use combos or chain attacks.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 NFL 2K2
Overall: I probably never would have even tried this game if not for EA's moronic announcement that Madden 2003 will not be supporting xbox live, but such is life. I was pleasantly surprised with NFL 2K2. It is in my opinion almost as good as Madden, but it is a different type of game. It is just as fun to play, but struck me more as an arcade type game instead of a simulation. I guess that's not a fair statement. If you look at Madden as a straight sim and Fever as a straight arcade game, 2K2 by Sega falls in the middle between a simulation and an arcade game.
Gameplay: The gameplay is fun enough for me. After I got used to the controls, which by the way are very good, I was playing like a veteran. The tackles look great, as do the catches by the receivers, but it is a bit too arcadey. The franchise mode leaves a little to be desired as well. The Texans would have been a nice addition, not that I really care about the Texans. Overall, the gameplay is fun, but a little lacking in reality.
Graphics: The visual appeal of NFL 2K2 is one of its strongest features. The faces, uniforms, fields, and stadiums all look great. However, I can't help but think that the visuals could have been improved to take advantage of the graphical power of the xbox. It seems almost as if it is a straight PS2 port.
Audio: The sound is average. I found the commentary to be a bit repetitive, but it could just be because it is a football game. The sound effects are above average and the crowd noise is a plus, especially when you are near the end zone.
Suggestions: Make it less arcadey and more of a sim.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 Triple Play 2002
Overall: I have to have a baseball game in my game library. A current baseball game. Triple Play has been my favorite series since the old PS one. It is just as good as I remembered, but I noted few improvements in the overall game. You would think that the game would have been incredible on the xbox, but in my opinion it was barely above average.
Gameplay: The gameplay is better than average. I was used to the controls, in a way, so it was like getting back on a bicycle after not riding for a while. It took a little getting used to the controls that throw the ball to the base, but that didn't take long. I love hitting home runs, but this game makes that a little too easy. It is so easy to hit home runs that it makes me think a more appropriate title would have been "Home Run Baseball 2002."
Graphics: The graphics look good, but not as good as they could look on the xbox. Some of the players faces look great while others look as if they were run over by a truck. The stadiums, however, all look incredible. The realistic and very accurate design of all the stadiums is almost enough to make me want to sit down and play a season just to take a tour of the major league stadiums. Even though the stadiums are exremely well done, the visual appeal of Triple Play 2002 could have been better with minimal effort from Electronic Arts.
Audio: The sound is not extremely impressive, but it passes the test. I like the sound of the bat hitting the ball and the ball smacking into a glove. Makes me want to go throw the ball around at the park. The commentary is pretty good and seems to follow the gameplay well. Although the sound quality is okay, it is similar to the visual appeal in that it could have been improved with minimal effort. EA is getting lazy.
Suggestions: Stop resting on your laurels as the sports gaming publishers to beat. You have serious competition coming up that is going to give you a first rate !&%$@#* whipping if you don't start delivering games of superior quality.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 Hunter: The Reckoning
Overall: This is the best game that I currently own, hands down. After waiting months for its release, I was kind of skeptical and trying not to be too hyped up about it. Five minutes of playing the game made my worries vanish. If you only have one game for the xbox, this should be it. This game is what I wanted but failed to get from Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. Although Hunter is much more gory than any Gauntlet game ever released, I count that as a good thing. If you are squeamish about blood, don't worry, you have the option to turn off the blood. Hunter: The Reckoning has to be one of the best games, if not the best game, ever developed for the xbox thus far. I would bet money that it will stand the test of time.
Gameplay: The gameplay is so good I almost don't know where to start. I guess I'll start with the multiplayer, which totally rocks. The fact that you can play with up to four players makes this game perfect for a double date, if you and a buddy can find the right (gamer) type of girls. The choice of weapons is also excellent. The sword and crossbow are cool weapons to use. The Avenger's axe is one of the most devastating default weapons. There are various firearms you can pick up throughout the game that are very effective. There is even a flamethrower, which comes in pretty handy. The use of Edges adds to the gameplay appeal, and makes the game both more fun and a little easier to play. Using an Edge to take out a large group of zombies can really save your ass. The choice to have each character have a missle type weapon and a melee type weapon was an excellent one. It gives the gamer a choice of fighting style that proves important in the different conflicts throughout the game. I can't think of one thing that would have made this game more fun to play.
Graphics: The visuals are breathtaking. You have to remember that the visuals in this game are dark and bleak because the game is dark and bleak. You're in a city taken over by evil forces, not a national park. The visuals are vivid and all the characters in the game are extremely well done. I'm almost at a loss for words in describing the visual appeal of Hunter: The Reckoning. There is absolutely no slowdown in the action as you are fighting, even if the screen is flooded with zombies. The sight of body parts flying off of zombies as you hack or shoot them is pretty much just like I would expect in a movie. I particularly like it when a head goes flying off. The only complaint I have about the visuals is the angle of the camera in some situations. If you walk behind a crypt in some situations, the crypt obstructs your view. Although this is a complaint, it is not one that would justify lowering the score of any aspect of this game. The enemies are very well done, very smooth. All the visuals are very smooth. The cut scenes are optional and as good as any I've ever seen. I particularly like that different characters in cut scenes are featured in different situations, perhaps by the number of kills or damage inficted by them. The visuals of Hunter: The Reckoning are virtually perfect.
Audio: I am pretty picky about sound, but the sound of Hunter: The Reckoning is excellent. The sounds of the weapons are hellarealistic. The sound of arrows thumping into bodies particularly stands out as stellar. The other sounds of weapon damage are excellent as well. The shotgun blast usually covers up the sound of the splat occuring when the shot hits the body, but if you listen closely you can hear it. The voice acting is well done, a rarity for most console games. Many of the comments made by the player characters are pretty funny. The dialogue is just as good as any game out there, as is the background music. The background music picks up when there are a lot of enemies on screen to give you that feeling of urgency. (If you don't already have that with 40 zombies bearing down on you) One really cool aspect of the sound in Hunter is that if you have your xbox hooked up to a surround sound receiver you can actually tell from which direction the enemies are coming by listening to the speakers. My wife has religiously adopted this tactic to alert her to the presence of skitters, spiderlike creatures for which she has developed a curious loathing. The sound appeal of Hunter: The Reckoning rates a perfect 10...er...5.
Suggestions: Fix the camera angles and make a sequel for xbox live. Also make it just a little longer.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Gauntlet Dark Legacy
Overall: Gauntlet: Dark Legacy is a rehashed port of an old Playstation game. It is little more than that. Most of the appeal lies in the multiplayer action. After you get past that, there is not much to love.
Gameplay: The gameplay is fun at first, but it is the same old same old from past Gauntlet games. My wife and I played Gauntlet: Legends together on the old Playstation and this felt like the same game, only slower. I have a hard time finding words to describe gameplay appeal because there really isn't any. I guess the reason for this is that the game is basically the same as the old Gauntlet: Legends game with a few new levels and characters. To sum up the appeal of the gameplay...it's played out.
Graphics: The game looks decent. As decent as a port can look anyway. It is my opinion that Midway did very little to improve the game visually. The old Gauntlet: Legends looked just as good as this "next generation" game and played better. The visuals are not nearly up to par.
Audio: The sound is good. I have always liked the character voices and the background music of Gauntlet and since this is just a rehashed port, the sound is the same. The game would have benefited from in game Dolby 5.1. It actually may have that, but if it does it certainly doesn't stand out and I didn't pick up on it. I guess the developers were thinking, "If the gameplay sucks, why should we bother to do 5.1 surround?" Good point, but the sound is decent.
Suggestions: Get off your asses. Gauntlet was a premier title for multiplayer fighting, but you guys are running the same old story into the ground. One might compare you to the moneygrubbing whores at Electronic Arts if you continue to release rehashed ports with the same old gameplay and storyline. Come up with a fresh storyline to return Gauntlet to the forefront of multiplayer adventure.
Overall Score: 4.0 / 10 Blood Omen 2
Overall: I wasn't sure I would be into this game, so I rented it first. It almost blew me away. It was fun to play and the major appeal is that the storyline is pretty immersive. I kind of got lost in it a few times, which to me is the mark of a good game. I was up late far past the time I should've been asleep because I just couldn't stop playing. Crystal Dynamics really showed that they are major players in the developer world with this jewel. They need to make it xbox exclusive, or at least port it to PS2 from xbox instead of porting it to xbox from PS2.
Gameplay: The gameplay left little to be desired. The controls took me a little bit of getting used to, but after about ten minutes I had the system down. I loved using the special abilities. They added a lot to the appeal of the gameplay.A way to fast forward throught the cut scenes would have been appreciated, but I can live without it. All in all I had a hellafun time playing Blood Omen.
Graphics: The visuals were sweet, but not as sweet as possible. I think it is pretty obvious that this is nothing more that a PS2 port. I'll spare you the usual "I hate ports" rant. Nevertheless, I would've appreciated it if the game had been upgraded, or improved, more specifically for the graphical power of the xbox. The present visuals make a great game good, whereas improved visuals would've made a great game phenomenal.
Audio: The sound of this game is actually better than I thought it would be. The voice acting is fairly well done and the sounds from the surrounding environment are good and the music is appropriately creepy. I have no complaints whatsoever with the sound.
Suggestions: Let us have a way to eliminate the cut scenes if we wish. Include some xbox extras or make the game xbox exclusive.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 Nightcaster: Defeat The Darkness
Overall: I was pretty hyped about getting Nightcaster. I thought it would be a game to rival the old Gauntlet. I was wrong. I liked the spell casting, for about an hour. Then after doing the same thing over and over again, I got bored. This game just doesn't work. It also makes Microsoft's quality assurance department seem a bit incompetent.
Gameplay: The gameplay is fun...at first. The game did have me feeling a little like Gauntlet did, especially the monster generators. I never liked those, but they are a welcome challenge. The appeal of the gameplay is lost in the repetitiveness that the game forces you to endure to play it.
Graphics: The visuals were pretty cool. The spells looked vivid and that is one of the strong points of the game. The repetitiveness hurts the effect of the good visuals, though, because after you've seen it a few times, it gets pretty dull. It seems like a pretty small environment. Too small and too direct. It could've been worse, but there is plenty of room for improvement.
Audio: The sound is actually pretty good. I especially like the way Arran's voice changes as he ages. The sounds of the spells were excellent. The voice acting was sub par, but overall the sound was the the most appealing thing about the game.
Suggestions: Take the concept you started with and multiply it by 25. The game needs to be bigger and much less repetitive.
Overall Score: 4.0 / 10 Fuzion Frenzy
Overall: I got this game as part of a package deal because it looked like fun and it is...marginally. There are a ton of games to choose from, but some of them aren't worth your time. This is a good game for parties, but that's about it. It's value is greatly diminished if you have other multiplayer games. I took my copy back and traded it for DOA3. Great move on my part.
Gameplay: The gameplay is fun. The controls are simple and easy to learn. It can be frustratingly difficult against the cpu at times, but gets predictable after you learn the way the cpu plays. Multiplayer is the way this game was meant to be and should be played. That is where most of the gameplay appeal can be found.
Graphics: The visuals are good, but not great. I will say that the details are covered. It's not going to blow you away, but it will catch your eye.
Audio: The sound starts out great, but rapidly goes downhill. The announcer is particularly annoying. After 6 hours of playing this I wanted to kick the him right in the balls. The music part is okay, but the style just did not appeal to me.
Suggestions: Fix the announcing, make the players bigger and tweak the graphics. Come up with better music. The party game concept needs to be totally reworked, so do that while you're at it.
Overall Score: 7.0 / 10 Knockout Kings 2002
Overall: I wanted a good boxing game and that's what I got. The single player mode, especially the create a boxer, is good enough to give you hours of gameplay. The multiplayer is even more fun. I highly recommend getting some friends together and beating the crap out of each other in multiplayer mode. However, the game is easily beaten in single player mode. You can win all the belts in a couple of days.
Gameplay: The gameplay leaves little to be desired. The controls are superb. It was no time before I was knocking people out. I particularly like the white button. If you are behind, hit the white button a few times for a "Johnny Cage" type attack. I'm not sure how much it actually helps catch you up, but it will make you feel a little better about getting beat up. This is also the first fighting game I've played lately that the block button is so easy to use. I can never block well, or at least I have to devote lots of thought to it, when the x or y button is designated as the block button. The left trigger is an excellent choice. I know you can configure your controller in most games, but I usually don't. The create a boxer mode isn't that great. I found the choices available to be somewhat lacking. The action in Knockout Kings 2002 is pretty exciting and a lot of fun.
Graphics: I was almost impressed with the visual appeal of Knockout Kings 2002, but I have this thing about ports. I hate them. No, I loathe them. Any game that is made for xbox should be reworked to take advantage of the capabilities that the xbox possesses that just aren't present on the other systems. Still, the visuals aren't that bad. The boxers look real enough. The only big problem is the punches sometimes either don't look as if they connect or go straight through the opponents head. How hard could it be to fix this? Maybe harder than we think, because I've noticed it on other games as well. Still, in this age that should be fixable. All in all the graphics and visuals are above par.
Audio: The sound is pretty good. The Dolby Digital is good, but I'm not so sure it is 5.1 because it sounded more like 2.0 to me. I don't really like rap music, but I can appreciate it's artistic value and it is perfect for the mood of this game. However, the soundtrack is quickly played out. The game would benefit from allowing users to rip their own tracks.
Suggestions: Add other boxers that were left out. We should be able to fight with or destroy Mike Tyson. I know he's a controversial figure, but like it or not he is important in the boxing world. EA Sports, you might have to change your name to EA Ports if you don't start hooking us up with some reworked games for the xbox. I know you made Madden 2001 specifically for the PS2. How about making SOMETHING specifically for xbox? Rework your !&%$@#* titles so that they will be all they can be on the xbox console or we just might start "just saying no" to your ports. Sega and Microsoft make good sports games as well, so it's not like you don't have competition.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 NHL Hitz 2002
Overall: I had been playing NHL 2002 by EA Sports and wanted something a little different. The overall appeal of this game is that it is not a simulation and it is easier to score. The three on three action moves a lot faster too. I like the checking and the shooting, although they are arcadey, that's one of the reasons I rented this game. I wanted some fun hockey that wasn't a simulation and that's what NHL HITZ is.
Gameplay: The gameplay is extremely fun. It took me a very short amount of time to get used to the controls, so that was a good thing. I like the fast gameplay and the goal scoring. The slapshots are hellacious. If you want to play some somewhat unrealistic hockey and score a lot of goals, this is your game. I doubt I'll buy it because I already have another hockey game, but this was a very nice change of pace. I may rent it again or pick it up used if I find it at the right price.
Graphics: NHL Hitz is graphically very well done. I particularly like the replays after you score. The crowd even looks good. It took me a while to get used to seeing the players catch on fire. I had to remind myself, "This isn't a sim, it's like an arcade game." I thought that this game was a port, but the graphics didn't seem to indicate this with any major flaws. I think it could have looked better, but not much.
Audio: I liked the sound. The music was pretty cool and the sounds the players and their sticks made were well done. The only thing I really hated was the announcer. They should have an option where you hold down the white button to duct tape his mouth shut.
Suggestions: I don't really have any suggestions except one. If you're going to port a game to the xbox, at least have the decency to rework it so that it takes advantage of the capabilities present in the xbox that just aren't present in other consoles.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 Dead or Alive 3
Overall: Overall, the game is probably the best fighting game ever made. It lacks a good story mode, but the limited rewards you get for defeating the game with each character are amazingly well done. DOA3 ceratinly lives up to the hype surrounding it. This is definately a keeper.
Gameplay: The gameplay is pretty amazing. The moves are incredibly fast. I didn't practice the moves enough at first and ended up feeling like I was just mashing buttons. A little practice cured that feeling. There are many different modes to choose from. The story mode is probably the best, since the reward is some amazing cinematography. The different modes add to the gameplay appeal. There are enough modes that if you get bored with one, there are plenty of others to choose to play. The ability to knock your opponent through and off of stuff only adds to the gameplay appeal.
Graphics: The visual effects are nothing less than stunning. I thought that the pictures I saw on the net before the games release were too good to be actual in-game play. I was wrong. The game looks even better than I had ever hoped. DOA3 is almost worth buying soley for its visual appeal.
Audio: The sound is almost perfect. The only problem with the sound for me is I would rather here the talking in English. I don't like subtitles, but that's just me. The music is good enough and I particularly like the fact that America's greatest rock and roll band contributed to the soundtrack.
Suggestions: The storylines could be improved. Take a look at the old Mortal Kombat and you will see great storylines. The storylines in DOA3 are kind of vague and leave a little TOO much to the imagination.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Pirates: Legend of Black Kat
Overall: If you like pirate games you'll love this game. It reminded me a little of Escape from Monkey Island, but is more serious and is a much better game. The multiplayer mode is especially good. I wasn't impressed at first, but the longer I played, the harder it was to stop. After playing this game for so long I have to say it is the best pirate game I've ever played.
Gameplay: The gameplay if extremely fun and there is more of it than I thought there would be. I rented it figuring to beat it over the weekend. Didn't happen. I enjoyed it so much i had to buy it. There is PLENTY of gameplay and I found it difficult to tear myself away from it. The controls are excellent, but the ship controls are more difficult and take a little getting used to. The free roaming aspect is amazing. You can pretty much do whatever you want. The quests are linear, but all the other aspects of Black Kat are free roaming.I like the mix because you don't get a bunch of different quests to do all at once. Overall Black Kat's gameplay appeal is almost perfect. I definately believe that it is the most underated game made for the xbox.
Graphics: The visuals are pretty good, but not as good as they could be. The main reason for this is that the game is a port. It is almost an insult to the xbox to just port a game over like this. It should have been reworked to take full advantage of the capabilities of the xbox. Although it is disappointing visually, it's still alright.
Audio: The sound is fairly good. I have my xbox hooked up to a Dolby 5.1 receiver and I am pretty picky about sound. I found the sound a little lacking at first, but the more I played the more I liked it. The sound of the clashing swords and the other battle sounds are well done. The music was annoying at first, but it also picked up. I think the music fits the game pretty well. All in all the sound could have been a little better, but not much.
Suggestions: Make a game specifically for the xbox so that xbox gamers aren't constrained by the limits of other systems. Porting games over with no improvements is a mark of laziness.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Mad Dash Racing
Overall: If you like cart based racers, you will love this game. It takes some getting used to because you are using running characters instead of driving ones. It's all good though, because it's easy to get used to the running part. There are several different characters from which to choose and they are all pretty fun to use. Mad Dash has lasting overall appeal.
Gameplay: The gameplay takes a little getting used to, but once you are used to the controls and the fact that the players are runing, it is addicitve. My wife and I stayed up all night playing because we were having so much fun we just couldn't stop. The different weapons are easy to use and at times also provide you with a good laugh. The powers the different classes of racers have are tight. There is something for everyone, whether you want to bash, dash, or glide your way through the course. The ability to become able to use all three abilities is a big plus. The gameplay appeal is excellent.
Graphics: The graphics are excellent. I love it when a developer makes a game that takes advantage of all of the xbox's capabilities. Eidos has certainly done that. The visual appeal of this game is nothing less than stunning.
Audio: The sound appeal is excellent. How could it not be? It uses 5.1 in the game! The things the characters say add a little humor, but the main appeal of the sound can be found in the excellent soundtrack, not to mention the ability to rip your own music. Unbelievable sound quality if you have a 5.1 receiver.
Suggestions: You could put a few more characters in the game and maybe some homing weapons, but this game is pretty much perfect.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Dark Summit
Overall: Overall this game is pretty good. If you like snowboarding, and like to have missions, this game is for you.
Gameplay: The main appeal of the gameplay is the snowboarding. Instead of a normal just for fun type of snowboarding, you are on a mission to save the world, or at least your mountain. The snowboading is excellent, though.
Graphics: The graphics are pretty incredible. I like it when a game takes advantage of the xbox's abilities. This game does that and more. The frame rates are smooth and fast. All xbox games should push the xbox at least this much.
Audio: The sound isn't as good as I hoped. I have a kickass Dolby 5.1 system and the sound suffers on it. It doesn't push the limits at all and the music is annoying.
Suggestions: Fix the sound and add more levels.
Overall Score: 9.0 / 10 Blood Wake
Overall: If you like to control a boat, look at great water effects, and blow stuff up, this is the game for you. I wish they had submarines, but hey, what do you want from a first generation game? If you like sea warfare, you will love this game.
Gameplay: The gameplay leaves very little to be desired. It is almost perfect. It can be a little difficult to control the boat, especially in stormy waters, but it is realistic. The controls are pretty much perfect and the game is incredibly fun to play. Anyone should love this game.
Graphics: The visual effects are stunning. The water looks great. The cut scenes are kind of lame. The water, though...It's almost worth it to buy the game just to see the water. However, I'm not into water and stunning visual effects as much as I am great gameplay. This game has all of the above.
Audio: The sound is great, but there is one little problem. The cut scene voices sound ridiculous. They don't ruin the game, but they come close. The "hero" sounds lame, more like a wannabe pirate than a real badass. The first mate sounds like a transvestite on crack. The machine gun fire and explosions almost make up for this lapse of judgement, but not quite.
Suggestions: Fix the voices. Make them less annoying and this game is perfect.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Batman Vengeance
Overall: This game's appeal is based on the fact that you are playing as the dark knight. That's about it. It is a port of a port of a port, so it really isn't even xbox worthy.
Gameplay: The gameplay is fun, what there is of it. There just doesn't seem to be much to the game. I'd say that the levels are short, but that would lead the reader to believe that they are longer than they are. The gameplay is good but there's not much of it.
Graphics: There is not much visual appeal. It looks good, but no better than on the PS2 and certainly not as good as it should on xbox. The game is a port of a port of a port and really not even worthy of the xbox. It takes advantage of nothing the xbox has to offer.
Audio: The sound is marginally decent, but nothing spectacular. If you are looking for great sound, this is definately not the game for you.
Suggestions: Geez, how hard is it to make a decent Batman game? Get with it...
Overall Score: 4.0 / 10 Azurik: Rise of Perathia
Overall: This game has no overall appeal. It pretty much just sucks. I can't imagine anyone actually enjoying this game.
Gameplay: The gameplay is lame. There is just not much to it. I can't imagine that anyone really has fun playing this piece of crap.
Graphics: The game looks okay. It isn't bad, but it isn't stunning or even xbox worthy for that matter. It looks better than it plays.
Audio: The sound is decent, nothing more. Even with Dolby 5.1 the sound is nothing spectacular. It's more like craptacular.
Suggestions: Scrap the whole game making thing and try to get a job at McDonalds.
Overall Score: 3.0 / 10 NHL 2002
Overall: This is by far the best hocky game that I have ever played. It is so addictive that I have spent man nights up when I should be sleeping playing hockey games to try to finish a season.
Gameplay: The gameplay is wonderful. Once you get the controls down, you will be scoring on wrist shoits, breakaways, and one-timers likw you are an NHL all star. I have ten xbox games, this one is the most fun to play.
Graphics: Visually, the game is stunning. The only complaint I have is that the camera angles keep ou just a little too far away to see the puck clearly when you score. I guess that's what the red light is for.
Audio: The sound is totally unbelievable. You feel like you are actually in an arena at a hockey game. The soundtrack is amazing as well. The music is well chosen and sounds excellent in 5.1. 5.1 also enhances the gameplay, but I don't need to tell you that. Any fan of 5.1 knows that it rules, but it does so especially in this game.
Suggestions: Try to keep the rosters updated a little better and make it easier to trade players. Move the view JUST A LITTLE closer, not much, so you can see the action better.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Halo: Combat Evolved
Overall: I've never been a big fan of first person shooters. Halo changed that. It is by far the best first person shooter ever made. It is unbelievable.
Gameplay: What's not to like? It is incredibly fun to play, yet not too difficult. The controls are easy to master and very effective.
Graphics: Stunning, absolutely stunning. I couldn't believe the environments and sometimes forgot that this was just a video game. Very immersive.
Audio: The sound is amazing. Blowing up stuff in Dolby 5.1 is definately a good thing. The Dolby 5.1 actually helps you to play the game by giving clues as to the whereabouts of enemies. Pretty amazing.
Suggestions: Online play...gotta have it.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Spider-Man
Overall: This is definately the best Spiderman game ever made. The game is fun to play and represents the Spiderman saga extremely well. I was impressed with everything about this game.
Gameplay: The gameplay is excellent. After reading the manual I was a litle concerned that the controls might prove to be too difficult. Five minutes later I realized this was not an issue at all. While the gameplay is challenging, the controls are not too difficult to master and are one of the reasons the gameplay is so excellent. I was especially appreciative that the xbox version has the extra levels and villain. I am extremly impressed with the gameplay of this game.
Graphics: The visual appeal...what's not to like? The game looks amazing! I can't imagine better graphics on any game. I truly believe that Spiderman is one of the most, if not the most, visually appealing game ever released for the xbox.
Audio: The sound is pretty much perfect. I've even been able to use the surround sound to figure out what is going on around me off the screen at times. The sound couldn't be better. Throw in the exclellent voice interactions, especially those in the tutorial, and the sound rates a perfect 10...well...5.
Suggestions: Put in more villains. I'm sure future versions will focus on different villains, but the more villains in each game, the better.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire
Overall: I've never really been a fan of first person shooters, but I have always been a huge Bond fan. I bought this game at Gamestop just because I wanted a new game and the manager there is hot. After I asked her to look at it I just couldn't give it back. When I got it home and played it, I was hooked. The game is objective based and uses multiple skills, gadgets, and weapons. The music is tight, and the 5.1, if that's what it is, really helps out during game play. The plot is worthy of a Bond movie, they could turn it into one if they wanted. This game is truly worthy of the Bond legacy. However, I have two serious problems with this game. The voiceovers really bugged me. How hard could it be to get the actual characters to do voiceovers for the game? That would be a huge plus. The other one that really bothered me were the names of the weapons and the MI6 inventor. Everyone knows that James Bond uses a Walther P-99, yet they call the gun the P2k? What is all that about? Then the inventor is called R? I don't think so. For God's sake, pay the extra money if you have to get permission to use the authentic names. Nevertheless, this game pretty much rules.
Gameplay: The gameplay is extremely fun. The different ways to enter the bases to try to be stealthy add to the fun factor. You can go tear assing through a level or sneak by as quiet as a mouse. The cars add another set of skills to be mastered to complete the game. They also add depth. There is something for everyone here. The features that give Agent Under Fire replay value are the medals, unlocking the hidden items, and the multiplayer mode. The multiplayer mode is unbelievably fun and addictive. That is the main reason I believe that I will never tire of playing this game.
Graphics: The graphics are excellent. This is a PS2 port, but it is very well done. I don't believe that the graphics take full advantage of what the xbox can offer. The people look good, but they could've looked great if this game had been designed especially for the xbox.
Audio: The sound checked out perfectly. I'm assuming that the Dolby 5.1 was in full force because I use the sound to tell where enemies are by listening for the guards footsteps and the helicopter sounds. If I'm wrong, sorry. It fooled me if it's not 5.1.
Suggestions: Use the actual names of the weapons and support people. Don't give us lame assed names that you just made up like P2K, KA74(for the AK-47?), and R instead of Q. Those are insults to any Bond fan. John Madden said "If it's not real football, I won't put my name on it." Take a note from Madden and use that philosophy because R, P2K and the like are not Bond. Keep it real.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Spy Hunter
Overall: I loved this game in the arcade, but the xbox version is even better. At first I almost didn't buy it because many people were saying it wouldn't be that good. I am so glad that I spent this money! This game is amazing.
Gameplay: The gameplay is amazing. It is better than the original. The different areas are exciting and make you feel like you are really there. It is not repetitive at all. It is just TOO SWEET!
Graphics: The game looks incredible. All the graphics are extremely well done. Spy Hunter is a violent work of art.
Audio: The Dolby 5.1 rocks. You feel like you are part of the game. you hear bullets whizzing buy and cars behind you in the rear speaker. The music takes your breath away. The Peter Gunn theme never sounded so good.
Suggestions: I have trouble thinking of a single suggestion for developers, especially since the original game is included in the software. The only thing that I can think of is maybe a sequel with new areas or a new story line. The developers Should start working on a 3D Elevator Action.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 WWF Raw
Overall: Every video game lover has to have a wrestling game in his collection to make it complete. It's like an unwritten rule. I was waiting for this game for months. It looks great. The sound is good, except for the annoying music that plays when you are wrestling. The gameplay flat out sucks. My initial disappointment with WWF Raw almost made me regret trading my PS2 for an xbox.Almost. However, this is definately the best looking wrestling game ever made and if it can be improved in subsequent renditions, it will stand alone. It has a lot of potential.
Gameplay: The gameplay sucks. It is far too hard to kick out of a pin. There is no one button specifically designated for this either. The finishers are too hard to pull off. It almost takes divine intervention to hit a finisher until you've really put in some practice time. Although the finishers are hard to pull off, they are worth the wait. The moves look good, but moving around is awkward when you are not performing a move. One inexcuseable flaw in the gameplay can be seen when you attempt a pin and your opponent kicks out. It is irritating beyond belief when you attempt a pin and the opponent beats ou to your feet as you lay rolling in pain on the mat. Even worse, if your opponent tries to pin you before you can get up. Another is the fact that you can not save on the way to a title shot. You have to fight 12 matches in a row. I don't have time to fight 12 matches in a row on any given night. I need to win 4 then save so I can get ready for work. I like to play every night, but there is no point when I know I'll get halfway through, then have to quit. A save feature and a way to at least defend a belt is desperately needed in this game, as well as a season mode. A saving grace of WWF Raw is the ability to actually take another wrestler's signature clothing and wear it as you pin him. Little touches like that make me think that Anchor is on the right track.
Graphics: The game looks great, with the notable exception of Triple H. This is definately the best looking wrestling game ever made. However, it is dated at its release because a lot of loser wrestlers like Justin Credible who aren't even on television any more are included in the game. The entrances and character models are by far better than any previous wrestling game.
Audio: The sound is great, especially the entrance music. However, the major flaw in the sound of this game is the fact that there is no commentary and the music you play during the match is annoying as all hell. This would be fine if you could turn the music off, but if you do that, it also turns off the entrance music. A little tweaking can improve these problems.
Suggestions: As good as this game looks, there is certainly plenty of room for improvement. The wrestlers look great, but the game play needs to be improved. Designate one button for kicking out of a pin. Designate one button to pull off a finisher. Add some blood and for the love of all that's holy, replace that irritating swill that plays during a match with some commentary by the King. Add lots of modes, backstage modes and different types of matches. If you need a hint, look at Smackdown 3. Keep the realistic match style and incredible graphics, but add SD3's match types. And please, fix the game so that if you attempt a pin, you won't be punished for it. I can't think of one match where a guy tried to pin someone and was thrown off, then pinned before he could make it to his feet. That's plain crazy. The last suggestion, a finisher on the ramp looks infinitely more painful than a finisher on the mat, so it should do at least twice as much damage. If it already is structured like that in this game, great. If not, please put that aspect in next time.
Overall Score: 6.0 / 10 Airforce Delta Storm
Overall: This game is one of the best air combat games ever made for any console. Although that is a strong statement, Air Force Delta Storm can back it up. There is something for everyone. If you like to fly any altitude from 10 feet to 40,000 feet and blow up ships, planes, nuclear missles, and space shuttles in surround sound, this is your game.
Gameplay: The gameplay is addictive. You start with a corsair, a basic fighter plane. Every mission you successfully complete gives you money to buy new planes and let me tell you, there are some flat out SWEET planes to buy.The left analog stick is very comfortable serving as your flight stick. There are three levels of controls so the game can be as easy or as challenging as you like. At any level, though, the gameplay rocks. It makes you feel as if you are actually flying, so don't be surprised to find yourslf leaning all over the couch as you dodge a missle or pull up in time to just keep from crashing into the ocean or the side of a mountian.
Graphics: The visual appeal of Air Force Delta Storm is it's weakest link. Don't get me wrong, the game looks good. It just isn't as good as it could be on the xbox. Still, the planes and ships look great. All the environments look great. The first person view looks just like the view from a real fighter plane. There's really not much to complain about, but the xbox is capable of handling much better graphics.
Audio: Another of Air Force Delta Storm's strengths is its sound, especially if you have your xbox hooked up to a surround sound receiver. If you get near another plane, you not only have the radar to tell you where it is, you can actually hear where it is by listening to the speaker through which its engine's sound is coming. The sounds of machine gun fire, exploding missles, and missles and planes whooshing through the air will make your gaming room feel like a war zone. My cat actually jumped three feet in the air and did a wind sprint to the other room after a particularly huge explosion. You can actually FEEL the sound. The best example may be the following situation, which will occur often in the game. You hear that someone is locked on to you. You bank hard to the right to avoid being hit. You watch the missle getting closer on your radar. Then, if you banked hard enough, you hear the sweet sound of a missle whooshing past in your rear speaker. The rear speakers also allow you to hear explosions behind you. For instance, you are flying close to a plane from behind. You fire your missle as you rocket past. You hear the plane explode behind you. The sound of Air Force Delta Storm is close to perfect.
Suggestions: You've already got yourself a winner. Clean up the graphics a little and you will have a world champion.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 Madden NFL 2002
Overall: Madden, there is no substitute. This game flat out rocks. The only thing that could make it better is for it to be built from the ground up for xbox, which hopefully EA will do next year.
Gameplay: The gameplay is perfect. It is a true football simulation, not arcadey at all. The depth is almost immeasurable. When you play Madden, it will be as close as you can get to actually getting on the field during an actual NFL game.
Graphics: The graphics are crisp. They are better than I thought they would be. The playstation 2 version came up short in the graphics department, but the xbox version doesn't disappoint.
Audio: The sounds are true to life and the commentary is better than I expected it to be. It's nice to hear Summerall and Madden calling the play by play.
Suggestions: Build Madden 2003 specifically for the xbox from the ground up.
Overall Score: 10.0 / 10 NFL Fever 2002
Overall: The graphics are incredible. The commentary is not so great. The gameplay flat out sucks. I traded it for Madden. Thank god EB has a good return policy.
Gameplay: The gameplay is not very good. The running game is ok, but the passing game is way to easy on offense and defense. Any tipped ball is intercepted. The kicking game is good, though.
Graphics: The game looks great, and that is most of its appeal. It is a sweet game to look at. The faces and all the aspects of the players uniforms are stunning.
Audio: The sound is lame. The commentary is really boring. The hits and sound effects are better and make up for some of this.
Suggestions: Go back to the drawing board.
Overall Score: 2.0 / 10
