Description

In Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix players assume the role of John Mullins, a military consultant working for the top-secret anti-terrorist group known as The Shop. In the game, players must tackle a wide-range of missions from hostage rescue and intelligence gathering, to search-and-destroy. To help create a realistic experience for the player, Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix offers vivid damage modeling and animations, accurate reproductions of over a dozen real world weapons and authentic combat scenarios set in far flung location such as Prague, Colombia, Hong Kong and Kamchatka. Additionally, many mission scenarios and objectives are inspired by the experiences of the actual John Mullins, a former Special Forces officer and military “consultant.”

Overall: IM SORRY BUT I JUST WAS NOT IMPRESSED... I THOUGHT IT WAS TOO LINEAR, AND BASIC.... DEFINETLY NOT A DEFINITIVE FPS GAME
Gameplay: basic is all i can say... i found it linear, and just boring...
i did not feel involved or intrigued enough to really get into the game
Graphics: the games visuals are really sub-average... i would have thought that it would make use of the xbox's power... unfortunatly that is not the case.
textures are pixelated, objects are blocky and polygons are clearly viseable.
Sound: sound is again at best average... guns sound average, as do effects.
environments seem to quiet... and the audio gives no impression of being where you are supposed to be... there is nothing bad about how this game sounds the problem is there is nothing good about it.
average
Suggestions: huge graphical and gameplay improvements.

Overall: I remember when the first Soldier of Fortune came out, a game while no doubt of quality, was nearly overshadowed by the parental backlash it endured over its violent and gritty gameplay. Can you believe it, parents actually fussed over large amounts of gore and dismemberments of all kinds? I can clearly see the befuddled, much less horrified look on the clerk?s face when little kids ran up to the counter and countless mothers purchasing the game without knowing what their children were actually getting in to; a gory good time!
After a three-year hiatus, Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix has returned to, and though it is a straight-out-port of the PC version, it still shines and induces projectile vomit with the best of them; a pleasure for those not suffering of a weak stomach. This game is all about the realistic blood, guts, pain, and decapitating goodness on can handle, even more so when online with Xbox Live. There is nothing more satisfying then watching your opponents intestines spill out after a spray from your rifle, or watching as they clutch their neck after being shot, trying to stay alive even as they realize they are dead meat.

Gameplay: Shoot, watch death, run, repeat. The game is really just your run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter FPS (only with all the gory goodness). A game you play to blow off some steam, daily stress of life can be relieved with a few head explosions. The controls are great so you won?t find yourself hinting for a button, and the nice selection of ?goodies? literally make standing against the endless onslaught of ?baddies? really cool. As the bullets are firing the rush you feel as you decimate wave after wave of opponents may just have you screaming, ?You like, you like?! Jumping into a helicopter?s 50 Cal and mowing down your enemies into individual pools of blood is just astounding.
With the good comes the bad, or the just plain terrible. It?s actually possible to run up to an enemy, and calmly wait. Five seconds later he may actually recognize you and quickly attack, even after you?ve already shot him! Sniper shots are hit-and-miss, as you could shoot a dead on shot into a guy?s skull and he still would keep walking towards you . . . even after blowing off an arm. Many enemies will crouch and shoot at you after taking multiple shots to the body and act like a bullet never passed threw their skulls! The bullet detection sucks, as even after missing a guy by a yard you can watch as he dies right there from a headshot. Strange, but true.

Graphics: While the game could easily run on a PS2, its gory content is still very prevalent and watching as bodies spill out rivers of blood and guts, definitely entails that some time went into the detail of the carnage. Still, the textures are somewhat lacking as blood looks a lot like spilt paint. After such a bloody mess, you?ll then take a gander at the environments and some of the player models and see that a substantial amount of time should have been spent on the lightening and textures (Although the game sports multi texturing it really doesn?t show though to any degree). The guns look bland, quite simply as if they were wrenched from the textures of the N64 hit, Goldeneye. Although the many vehicles you ride in are astounding, this is just another example of how a developer shames itself by not taking advantage of the Xbox hardware.

Sound: While the footsteps will make you want to put your guy in wheelchair, the bullets flying and the screams of pain from dying opponents makes you squeal with maniac joy. The gargling sound of your enemy gasping for air as a well-aimed bullet passes through his neck is cool, but after a couple of times it can get really repetitive and you?ll quickly avoid neck shots. Weapon sound effects are quite realistic, from the pinging of bullets bouncing off the metal to the sound three rounds hitting the stomach of your adversary make. Especially effective is the sound your victim?s insides make as they splash against the cold floor. Bodies hitting the floor after a beating are quite effective and bad elevator music in between missions round out the audio. Is it the Halo soundtrack reborn, no, but then what is?

Suggestions: While a great game and a great XBL title I would recommend that Activision becomes more familar with the Xbox hardware as these graphics could be done and outmatched on the Sony Playstation2

Overall: If you have XBOX LIVE,this is one of the best games out there right now.I have the most fun playing this game than any other right now.
Gameplay: This game was made for Xbox Live,The multiplayer online maps are put together very well,Good game just to take out your frustrations, instead of shooting your teacher or one of your co-workers.
Graphics: The graphics are decent. Not HALO like but what game is right now, so don't worry about getting dissapointed. It will do,until the next FPS comes around
Sound: The guns in this game sound the best from any other game.Just ask my neighbors upstairs, they were knocking at my door the first day I got this game.Saying Wtf is going on down there.
Suggestions: Fix the walkie talkie so you can have all of your 6 players on it at once instead of 4.And be able to change your name instead of using your gamertag.Other than that I am enjoying this game until the next best comes along.

Overall: This game is simply amazing in the multiplayer department.Offline its a different story. The Single Player is pretty straight forward with a thin story line compared to games like Halo. But really the Multiplay is where the game stands out.Awesome online modes and maps combined with good looking graphics make up this great game.
Gameplay: The gameplay is somewhere between Unreal Championship and Ghost Recon. While its smart to use strategy its not really necessary. In the single player mode, I found it good to lean around corners to covertly take out foes and the same applies for my online play.Online the game is simply amazing and has to be one of the best online FPS which deserves to be ranked up with RTCW.The controls are some of the best I have seen in an Xbox FPS since Halo. When playing Live you can choose from 6 different game modes and 20 online maps(with 5 more coming via DLC)The indoor maps are incredibly detailed compared to their outdoor counterparts. The Random Mission Generator works good but could be better.
Graphics: The Viusuals aren't too shabby in SOF2.While it runs off the same engine as RTCW, the QuakeIII engine, SOF2 has some very neat effects.Things like the lovely swaying bushes and trees in the Colombia levels(note this does occur on Live as well!) as well as the sparks that appear when you shoot metal objects.I also noticed the dirt that flies up when you shoot the ground. The weapon models that are in view are EXCELLENT.They are quite smooth looking and the way they react to different lighting conditions is very cool! The weapons appear to have more polygons than we have seen in other FPS.And how could I end the Visual Description without mentioning the gore.Yup SOF2 is ultra gory and not for the kiddies or the weak of heart. You can shoot off arms, legs, hands, feet, shoulders, heads, and more. You can expose intestines and brains. On Live the gore is downgraded for obvious bandwidth reasons. The character models that you can shoot the apart are also excellent. They look quite natural and the rag doll physics are good, despite some annoying clipping through walls.Overall the graphics are good but not as impresive as Halo or Splinter Cell, but they are certainly up to par with other FPS like Wolfenstein.
Sound: The sound in this game is very good.Included are realistic weapon noises as well as great noises like blood gushing and body parts blowing apart. When shooting different objects like metal and wood, they, as they should, make different noises.I especially like the realistic noises that you make when you do shoot metal. In the single player you may get tired of the repetitive death noises.Online the foot step noises can get annoying as well but overall, SOF2s sounds are excellent
Suggestions: Instead of directly porting SOF2, they should of added graphical improvements like more bump mapping and polygons. They could of added more Xbox exclusive features right out of the box but thats no biggie. Also more players on Live would be nice but I feel 12 is a good number.

Overall: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix is a first person game with attitude. Not a game suitible for children under 17 years of age, because of very graphic violence, such as body dismemberment. Now for the game which is based on a man named John Mullins, who is apart of a U.N. anti-terrorist group called the shop. And your mission is to stop a terrorist group from unleashing a deadly genetic virus upon the world.
Gameplay: The controls in this game are very easy to use. And after learning them which will take about thirty minutes, they will be very fluid in their use and you will be a killing machine. Some parts of the first missions are a little bit buggy but then they clear up later on and then you get really into the game. For multiplayer gameplay I will say for me it is the best xbox live first person shooter title I have played and it is very worth the money just for the online play. And the gameplay will go on for a long while with the roughly 50+ missions for single player, and a random mission generator. And that generator is a fun feature, but it could have been improved just a little bit more. But the real core of the game is the multi player for online which is just amazing, with alot of team work, very similar to counter strike. One draw back for multiplayer is that it needs some sort of ethernet cord put into the Xbox in order to play the game with some friends and it will only work system link, but that does not effect the game very much because it is still very very very very fun to play.
Graphics: Here is where some reall issues come into play. The visuals on most of the big out door jungle, desert, snow levels are that the draw distance is not very good at all. The problem with that is that it makes sniping a big problem and you wont be able to see an enemy until it is to late and your staring at his feet on the ground bleeding. I mean this problem could have been easily spotted and I dont know why it was not, But it really does not effect the game very much but it is just a little thing that gets on my nerves a little bit. For the rest of the visuals, the indoor enviorments are well done and the character models are done realisticly. And there are alot of great multiplayer maps that are indoor and semi outddor which are amazing to play with twelve people. So overall the visuals are done rather nicely, one more little thing which is not to big. When you kill an enemy the death is great and messy but some times the bodies just look a little creepy when dead. I mean the way their bodies lie down on the ground some times its alittle buggy. But still the deaths are very real and they are very satisifying when you have a great shot you just want to admire your great job and then walk away respected.
Sound: The sounds in Double Helix are very well done, the guns sound real and death sounds are good. All the sounds you would expect are there. Sometimes the glass break sound is a little delayed but besides that it is very good.
Suggestions: If another sequel comes out for this series then it would look good with more Xbox standard graphics and a deeper single player game. I really like the real life look of the gore, and that should be even more damage sensitive with some more cool looking body dismemberment. And for the last thing the multiplayer is amazing and if you add to that, by some inovative online game types and more people, you would have an unbelievable game on your hands. And instead of realeasing for computer first it should be more focused just for the Xbox sice the Xbox system can do some amazing things with the online voice chatting and the power of the graphics engine.
