First Day Modern Warfare 2 Sales
Research firm GfK Chart-Track has revealed first-day sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in the UK came in at an estimated 1.23 million units sold, nearly doubling that of the previous record holder Grand Theft Auto IV, which sold an estimated 631,000 units.
Broadpoint AmTech analyst Benjamin Schachter has applied the 2:1 first-day difference in the UK and applied it to worldwide sales, saying he expects the title to push double digits in its first week.
"We estimate that Modern Warfare 2 could have sold up to approximately 7 million units at worldwide retail in its first day," Schachter said in his note to investors. "In addition, with GTA IV selling-through 6 million units worldwide in its first week, that suggests week one of Modern Warfare 2 worldwide sell-through could approximate 11.7 million."
"While two-times the week one tally for GTA IV may seem aggressive, the bottom line is that we believe current consensus estimates of around 12 million for the December quarter may end up being conservative."
Schachter also notes heavy discounting and competitive pricing amongst stores have have lead to stronger first-day sales in the UK.
