GDC: Bungie in Major Recruitment Drive

In the past, both as an indie and as a Microsoft studio, the company focused on one development project at a time. But its future focus is on multiple games. “It’s not something we’ve had to face before,” said spokesman Brian Jarrard. “But now it’s a necessary step to take.” The firm also needs to fill positions previously handled by Microsoft, before it went back to independence.

Dedicated teams have been working on secret new projects even while Halo 3 was in production. The company doubled in size - to around 140 people - between Halo 2 and Halo 3 and is seeking to grow again. Many developers are still working on maps for Halo 3, but are gradually being moved to new projects. “It’s a pretty natural process,” said Jarrard.

Bungie’s booth at GDC Careers Hall is, like many of its competitors, extremely busy this week. But the power is with the talent as developers seek to attract superstars to their studios. “We’re looking for established, experienced talent and talent that’s straight out of school,” said Jarrard. “And we’re looking for people who will stay with Bungie for years. We have a very low turnover and that’s one of the things that makes it a special place to work. That, and Seattle which is a great part of the world.”
