Ubisoft pledges last-gen, cross-platform support 'for years' to come

Slowly but surely, games exclusive to the next-generation are finally being made. Ubisoft is pledging to go next-gen only with Assassin’s Creed Unity, for example. However, not everyone is ready to leave the last generation behind. Ubisoft has confirmed it plans on supporting Xbox 360 and PS3 for "years after."

Ubisoft VP Lionel Raynaud promised that "We will have games for PS3 and 360 for this year and probably the years after," Ubisoft VP Lionel Raynaud told Edge. "We want to be able to provide games to people who are playing on these consoles."

Of course, doesn’t cross-generation development hamper how far you can go with the next-gen versions? Raynaud says last-gen consoles won’t hinder development. Instead, it’ll become increasingly clear that gamers should upgrade their consoles. "If you decide that new gen is lead for all of your games, then you have no restrictions at all--you’re just saying that the other generation will maybe not be able to have everything."

Rumor has it that in addition to Assassin’s Creed Unity for next-gen, Ubisoft is working on a brand new game for last-gen consoles. Called "Comet," it will continue the nautical theme of Assassin’s Creed 3 & 4. (Unity, on the other hand, takes players to the French Revolution.)

It’s likely many other publishers will follow Ubisoft’s philosophy. Electronic Arts, for example, said that cross-generation games would continue to at least 2015.
