Witcher 3 will be open-world RPG, likely next-gen
Following last night’s early Game Informer leak, CD Projekt RED has officially announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The game is not only the next game in the award-winning franchise, but it will also be "the final Witcher game from the studio."
"People may ask if this is really going to be the last Witcher game. Yes, it is," studio head Adam Badowski said in the announcement. "Why? Because we believe that we should end the series on a high note. Technology has progressed to where we can finally tell the story the way we want, with the visuals we want, in the world we imagined. This will be the ultimate fantasy RPG experience, and while we’re hardly out of stories to tell, we believe it’s time for us to look to new worlds and new horizons to keep pushing the boundaries of what we can create."
Wild Hunt promises to end the story of Geralt of Rivia, with an improved fighting system that promises "no Quick Time Events, only intuitive RPG gameplay." However, the biggest new feature for The Witcher 3 has to be the game’s open world, which the developer claims is "larger than any other in modern RPG history." According to Badowski, the world will be 30 times larger than the one featured in The Witcher 2.
The game is aiming for "all high-end platforms," which presumably includes next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft. CD Projekt RED is currently aiming for a 2014 release.
