(RUMOR) - The Original Crysis May be Headed to Consoles
While Crysis 2 came out on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, its predecessor has remained a PC exclusive since its release in November 2007. It doesnt look like that will remain the case for much longer.
A listing for an Xbox 360 version of Crysis showed up today on the Korean game rating board, as noted by a member of the MyCrysis forums. Since then, an EA Korea representative has supposedly confirmed (via Kotaku) that the game is coming to 360. No release date was announced.
The ESRBs website (as pictured below) also now shows an Xbox 360 version of Crysis, as well as a PlayStation 3 version, to go along with the PC game. Crysis Warhead, a PC-only spin-off, is still shown with PC as its only platform.
Back in 2006, it was made clear that Crysis could be ported to 360 despite the systems lack of DirectX10 support. It was later said that the game could be brought to consoles if it sold well enough on PC. The CryEngine 2, which powered Crysis, was ported to PS3 and 360, but it was unclear if the game would be brought over with it -- the PC version was suffering from rampant piracy, prompting developer Crytek to decide to abandon PC exclusives. Crysis 2, in turn, went multiplatform.
"[People] are asking me if its possible. Of course. You can get Crysis even on the Nintendo DS," said Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli in 2007. "But not that Crysis -- you cannot get Crysis as it is on PC on any console. What you would have to do is compromise the design and the level design&In order to make Crysiss gameplay [on console] you would have to make a derivative Crysis and optimize it for the Xbox 360 and PS3. In fact, if we do it, well optimize it for each platform."
