Call of Duty Digital Platform in Development
Activision wants to even further expand the Call of Duty franchise beyond its current annual-release status. A new Activision-owned studio named Beachhead has been formed that will focus entirely on "the development of an innovative new digital platform and special services for our Call of Duty community."
The platform has already been in development for more than a year and will "support in-game integration and bring online experiences and console play together for the first time." It will also "create the best-in-class online community, exclusive content, and a suite of services to supercharge the online gaming experience like never before." Its a lot of talk that isnt particularly specific about what it is Beachhead is working on. Thats to be expected from a brief intro during an investors conference call.
Prior to the announcement, an investors report from Activision stated that the company would pursue "the development of a best-in-class digital community surrounding the Call of Duty franchise."
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has promised more information will be coming in the "near future." And its desperately needed, as its very unclear if this means more downloadable content, more games, an enhanced community website, a subscription service, or some alternative.
