Sold Over 5 Million Each
On a conference call with shareholders today EA revealed that both Medal of Honor and Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit have sold over 5 million units. Both franchises are long-running staples in EA’s roster, and both were given dramatic updates in 2010.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was given to Burnout developer Criterion who made the game a big, streaming arcade experience. The game also featured an asynchronous online mode where players were constantly updated on their friends best scores in various challenges. IGN’s Ryan Geddes described it as a "high-octane racer that grabs on tight but doesn’t take itself too seriously..."
Medal of Honor was an even bigger gamble, setting the traditional first person-shooter in the early days of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2002. The game was set during a fictional operation, though it was loosely inspired by events like Operation Anaconda, in which highly-trained Tier-One operators led the charge into the Afghan mountains to root out Taliban strongholds. The game earned criticism from some veteran families because it allowed people to play as the Taliban in the DICE-developed multiplayer mode--an option that was removed in the final retail release.
