Capcom Defends DLC Characters for MvC 3

The industry has changed since Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was first released on the Dreamcast in 2000, and one of the biggest changes is the rise of downloadable content. And with the recent revelation that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will indeed eventually offer new characters as DLC, Capcom has already begun running damage control to address angry fans who feel DLC characters have no place in the series.
"Suffice to say, there are differing views on DLC," writes Christian Svensson, Capcom’s VP of strategic planning & business development, in a reply to a post on the Capcom Unity boards (via Shoryuken). "Everyone needs to decide whether there’s value in the offering or not and make your purchasing decisions accordingly. That’s true not just of MvC3, but of all games."

Svensson goes on to suggest it’s not a case of Capcom trying to nickel-and-dime gamers unnecessarily, but a case of using DLC to offset rising development costs. "As I’ve stated in prior interviews, DLC is part of the business model these days given the massive costs of production and can be the difference between a profitable product and an unprofitable product," he explained.

Also addressed in another post was the prospect of an MvC3 demo before release, which Svensson shot down definitively. "Sorry, but zero percent [chance for a demo]," he wrote. "As with Street Fighter IV, there will be no demo for Marvel vs. Capcom 3."

MvC3 is set for release on February 15.
