Robotech: Battlecry
Overall: For die-hard fans of the '80s television series...this is by far the coolest game you could have ever asked for! The confidence shown by Viscious Cycle to give a true representation of the show, rather than an "interpreted view" shines through in graphics, sound, gameplay, and shear nostalgia. Unbelievable!
Gameplay: The booster, two choices of buttons for weapons in each mode, a "Special Ability" button, plus the arcade style flight response is top notch. The quick-change system for converting from battloid, to guardian, to veritech can be a tad confusing at first, as it's the D-pad that is used. maybe the new S-controller would work better. Still, it handles like a dream.
Graphics: I think the concept of Cell Shading was created for this game. What eye candy. Throughout all the levels you'll be completely enthralled, even if you put down the controller and just watch. However, the flight (veritech majority) levels come off much better than the land-based levels. Which is like saying that a Lamborghini is better than a Mercedes...they both still kick major butt compared to a Cavalier!
Audio: Straight out of the TV series. original actor's voices, original music from the show, even sound effects are reused from the series which makes for a great overall sound experience.
Suggestions: For the die-hard Robotech fan, this game will never dull. However, for the casual gamer, this game will stimulate until completion, but ultimately get tossed in with the old pile of "Beaten Games".
A note to Viscious Cycle...eliminate the "voice over still frames" narration in between scenes. If enough time is put into crisp clear animation for the story interludes between levels, this game would have people drooling.
