Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
Overall: I have owned alot of consoles in my life and played alot of games. I still have fond memories of Atari 2600, Colecovision, Intellivision (this was my first system growing up), Turbo Grafix 16, Sega, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast. I have to admit that sometimes a game comes out and makes you want to buy the system. I remember seeing GTA III for the first time and I ran out and bought the PS2. When I first saw Metroid Prime I bought the Gamecube. When I first saw Halo I bought the Xbox. All of those games were difinitive reasons to buy their respected systems. I have since traded my PS2 and Gamecube in because I figured if I was going to have any system I might as well have the best.
For all of you Gamecube and PS2 owners who happen to read this review because you heard The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay was a great game, let me make a suggestion to you. Run, don't walk to your favorite game retailer and trade in your system. It is know officially obsolete. Vivendi Universal, Starbreeze and Tigon Studios have created THE difinitive reason to own the best console on the planet. Up until this point, Halo was my favorite. Don't get me wrong, Halo was the greatest launch title for any system ever and still IS one of my favorite FPS's. Whereas Halo may have launched the Xbox, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay puts the Xbox into orbit and keeps it there. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is the best FPS I have ever played on any console. The graphics, the sound, the gritty realism makes the atmosphere of this experience virtually palpable. It is as close to playing a movie as we have come so far. There is really nothing I can say bad about this experience. The only negative I can think of is maybe the seams in some of the characters during the cut scenes could have been a little bit more hidden. If every game were as lucky to have only that to be their biggest problem then we probably wouldn't have to wait so long for something like The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay to come along and redifine gaming.
Gameplay: The controls are spot on. Not since Halo have controls been this easy to handle in a first person shooter. Arguably some of the best fighting controls ever. I though it was terrific how you could use the analog stick to create upper cuts and hay makers and when done in a certain order, create !&%$@#* kicking combos!
Graphics: Flat out the best graphics on any system EVER! The textures alone made me think I could reach out, touch my television screen, and feel the cold hard steel of the prison doors or the gritty, jagged edges of the rock walls in the mine.
Audio: The ambient sounds of the prisoners yelling and screaming, the flies buzzing around the waste disposal units, all of this after going through the prison, made me feel like I needed to take a shower.
