Xbox Video Game System Box artInterview with Microsoft Canada

Microsoft has many offices across the world, but the importance of this man Doug Taylor plays a crutial role in the successful delivery of the Xbox across Canada.

Q: XBA: Thank you taking the time to talk with us, what is your name and position at Microsoft Canada?

A: DT: My name is Doug Taylor and I'm the National Sales Manager here at Microsoft Canada.

Q: What's your involvement with the Xbox?

A: I've been working on this project for almost two years. I was the first Xbox guy in Canada, so for everybody it's been a long time coming. How it started was quite funny, I was at the Seattle campus of Microsoft, and at the time I was working in the retails sales department. I walked by this room, and a bunch of guys says..psssst, come here...check this out! I tell you I was amazing and say I wanted to be part of this.

Q: Please name a few stores where the Xbox will be sold.

A: Our launch partners are: Blockbuster, CompuCentre, Electronics Boutique, Future Shop, Real Canadian Superstores, Toys R Us, Videotron, Wal-Mart and Zellers.

Q: XBA: Approximately how many Xboxes will be available in Canada at launch time and Christmas?

A: DT: In North America we have 1.1 million from launch until the end of Holiday. We have strong replenishment plan so there's plenty of units coming into the country to support the anticipated demand.

Q: XBA: If a retail store sells out of Xboxes before christmas, approximately how long until more are available? (In Canada...limited supply?)

A: DT: We currently are pleased with the replenishment flow, so units should be consistently available throughout the holiday season. We do not want people to feel "pain" getting an Xbox, so we made sure the availability was going to be there. All the Xbox consoles that are sold in Canada are shipped from our main distribution centre here in Toronto, so from that you can calculate how long it should take to get to you. Down the road we may move to having an additional western hub to ship units from there as well.

Q: XBA: Which store will carry the widest selection of games?

A: DT: At launch you'll see 15-20 titles, if you look at most stores they only have a minimum 4 foot section, so we expect every launch partner to carry all titles.

Q: XBA: How many first-party titles will be available on launch?

A: DT: We have 5 first party titles available at launch: NFL Fever 2002, Munch's Oddysee, Halo, Fuzion Frenzy & Project Gotham. Amped will ship next week. Nightcaster & Azurik will follow shortly. Bloodwake will then be next.

Q: XBA: Have you played the Xbox? If so, which game if your favorite one?

A: DT: Of course I've played the Xbox, I have to admit..I am a driving game fan…I'd have to say Project Gotham

Q: XBA: MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION: Why is the Xbox not sold in the Sears Christmas catalogue this year?

A: DT: That's an easy one. Eleven months ago I met with Sears and their Catalogue came up. At that point, it was impossible to make a commitment to participate. We decided to that at launch our focus was Gamer Destinations...As the product and supply is readily available, then Sears becomes an important Retailer to have distribution at.

Q: XBA: Rumour: People are going to be camping out in front of stores...Do you have any words for these people?

A: DT: Stay warm! (-:
