STAFF REVIEW of RoadKill (Xbox)

RoadKill Box art Midway and Terminal Reality have taken the elements from the ever popular Grand Theft Auto and Twisted Metal and smeared them together with a big helping of Road Warrior. They produced what they call Roadkill, a game where a strange plague called Rot, raged over mother Earth, causing anarchy to rain all over, leaving different clans to battle against one another. Now you take the role of Mason Strong a mercenary who goes Hell County to take revenge on the person who betrayed him. To help in this mission, you will be able to take the wheel and unleash hell in many vehicles with weapons ranging from, guided missiles, machine-guns, and grenade launchers. Sounds like fun!

RoadKill?s gameplay has what it takes to be a great game. The single-player game has pretty much the same backbone as Grand Theft Auto III. As soon as you start, you are giving the ability to cruse over a huge chunk of territory where you can drive freely. You have about 30 core missions and numerous side missions, such as seeing how many people you can impale under a certain time. The missions you must take are in three cities of Hell County - Blister Canyon, Lava Falls and Paradise City. While in the cities you must get a rep, the meaner the better. With RoadKill's reputation system the more people you kill and more enemy vehicles you destroy, will help build the necessary reputation you need to get from a low life vagrant to an !&%$@#* kicking overlord and get the gang following that will allow you the additional protection you will need to survive Hell Country. As you?re playing you must also collect salvaged parts to help in the upgrading of your vehicles with such items as nitrous thrust, armor plating and new weapons. Since this is game is set in Post-Apocalyptic era there will be anarchy all around, people on the streets will be shooting at cars or other people. Cars driving on the sidewalks, running over and impaling people. So if you like, besides the doing the typical missions, why not take a break, ride around and stir up some trouble. But in doing so, keep a close eye on your riot meter. If it gets full, all hell breaks loose and before you know it everybody wants a piece of you.

Other than the single-player mode, RoadKill offers a multiplayer mode for up to four players. The mode also features some power-ups that aren?t available in the single mode, so you might see your most of your opponents putting the peddle to the metal trying to get the best pickups and using them to get the upper hand.

Graphically this game looks very appealing. It definitely sets the mode for a world turned chaotic. All the cars have that Road Warrior feel, you know the look, rusted, grimy cars found on the side of the road with exposed engines, and let?s not forget gun turrets on the back. Like I said before the streets are covered with activity and with very few slow downs. They best part is getting someone stuck on your car; this is where it gets fun. I?m hear to tell you when they get stuck... they get stuck. Those poor bastards get thrown around like rag dolls, arms and legs just flapping in the wind and blood flies everywhere.

Another thing that was taken from GTA was the concept of having radio stations. Which I think I like Roadkill?s more. I would find myself pulling over just to hear what they say. Some of the talk shows were hilarious, but sadly they got repetitive. So to fix the problem just turn the station, Roadkill has six of them, ranging from rock to car talk. With songs from Judas Priest, Blue Oyster Cult and Rick Springfield just to name a few. There is also a station that will forewarn you of weather events and gives mission updates. For example, I heard that a tornado was coming our way and was able lure some opponents that were chasing me right into it. There is also a station to put your own soundtrack in to play.

Suggestions:
You guys made a very enjoyable game to play. I would have like to see the ability to hi-jack cars, but I understand why you didn?t because you didn?t want to make it to much like GTA. I know this has nothing to do with how you made the game, but it is still a suggestion. You need to play this game with the Sesame St. theme song playing or anything that sounds sweet and cute. I just got the biggest kick. "Sunny days chasing the clouds away" BOOM, AGHHHH!!!
