STAFF REVIEW of Sega Soccer Slam (Xbox)

Sega Soccer Slam Box art I have played many soccer games for consoles in my time and I would say that Soccer Slam has to be the best I have played yet. Fast paced 3v3 soccer action with an almost hockey feel to the game, this game was most impressive. Whether you are slamming home a volley or performing one of several power moves this game is exciting from start to end. The game doesn?t stop there though you have six teams to choose from at the beginning and can unlock more as you go along. Meanwhile you have five game play modes and two mini-games to choose from. All out exciting bone-crunching soccer play.

At first the controls seem a little !&%$@#* bersome. Only after sitting down and going through the practice session will you realize that the controls are simple enough for anyone to pick up on, but still hard enough to allow separation from long time Soccer Slam player and n00b. The over all game play is lightening fast and easy to follow and get in the flow of the game. The different game play modes make it interesting. For instance in the Challenge mode you have the opportunity to pick three of your favorite players putting them on one team, while moving through four matches to of mix-and-match players so that you can unlock the hidden teams.

I found this game to be very appeasing to the eyes from the menu at the beginning to the actual game play. The almost cartoon feel is an added touch from the drab ? everyone looks the same ? feel that you get from most soccer games for consoles. The characters are very nicely detailed and fit their characters very well, while the crowds and stadiums were also nicely done, I didn?t find the crowds to be anywhere near the detail of the players and the characters. Overall I don?t think the crowd?s graphics add too much to the game or on a better note they do not detract from the game play.

I thought the crowd sounds were awesome. You get the boos and the hoorays right on queue. The announcer can get a little annoying at times (mostly when your arse is being handed to you) with their constant chatter, but thankfully that can be taken care of in the options menu.

Suggestions:
Overall I found the game and game play very exciting and fun to play. One of the things I would suggest looking at is the menu system. Although once you get the hang of the order of things it is very easy. The menu system tends to be quite clumsy the first time you load the game. I would also think about adding a little more detail to the crowd. But again I say overall this game was very well put together.

Overall: 8.0 / 10
Gameplay: 8.0 / 10
Visuals: 8.0 / 10
Sound: 8.0 / 10
