STAFF REVIEW of Destino Indomable (Xbox Series X)

Destino Indomable Box art Loosely translated to “Unbreakable Destiny”, Destino Indomable is an interesting and unique visual novel where you’re not only given options of how to respond in dialogue, but also placing you as the star of the hottest Spanish soap opera on TV (referred to as telenovelas). Telenovelas are known for their drama, romance, and over the top twists and turns, and Destino Indomable is no different even with you making the decisions.

You’re the new lead actress on the hottest Latin soap opera, Destino Indomable, but your first order of business will be how you appear, from body type, hair style, accessories, and your two names, as I guess that’s a thing. Once you’ve done this prepare to be engulfed in humor, drama, overly attractive people, romance, and plenty of slaps.

Given that Destino Indomable is a visual novel, I don’t want to delve much into the narrative, as that’s the whole experience, but you can expect many twists, turns, and chaotic drama, which is why the show is so popular with its audience. While there may be a desire to play things safe, remember, you’re acting on a soap opera, so over the top drama and ‘bad’ decisions may be a great thing for ratings, especially when it comes to deciding to slap people.

It seems your choices do matter to an extent, as it will change the story based on your decisions. What’s interesting is how they justify this on a scripted TV show. Apparently the script is incomplete, and there’s no time to do any writing, so when it’s “Lights, Camera, Action”, you as the lead simply needs to improvise all of your lines. It’s actually quite a clever way to integrate the narrative within the visual novel confines. There are a number of endings, so there’s certainly a reason to play through a few times if you want to see how different decisions can alter the outcome, change character personalities, or who might even make a drastic return.

As for the gameplay, it’s what you would expect from a visual novel, simply choosing which dialogue or choice and confirming when given the option. Thankfully there’s some options for how quickly the dialogue progresses if you’re a quick reader, though unfortunately it’s not voiced, so be prepared for a lot of reading. You can hold a button to fast forward if you’re playing subsequent playthroughs, so you won’t have to sit through all of the same scenes again if you choose. You’re also able to save and load from any point, something I found handy when I wanted to see the outcome of a different choice.

A soap opera wouldn’t be nearly as engrossing if it didn’t have a bunch of romance, and it’s no different here. With a number of different romance options, seeing each storyline play out will give you different insight into the overall story and mysteries. Not really into someone? This is where your patented slaps come in, making for good dramatic TV for the audience.

What I didn’t expect, though it makes complete sense given the TV show backdrop, is that after each episode, there’s a follow-up talk show that discusses this week's episode that just aired. The host discusses a recap, maybe talk about the scandals, but also shows a chart with the latest polls showing each TV personalities popular meter. Each character is ranked based on a number of factors, though I’m unsure how it’s really scored or if it really matters.

Being a visual novel, you’ll have an idea what to expect from its visuals; bright and colorful hand drawn characters without much animation. Each character is quite distinct from one another, filling the stereotypes you’d come to expect. There’s just enough scene changes and differently drawn poses from each character that it doesn’t seem as repetitive as I expected.

The show intro/outro is done quite well and does seem to be a as if it could be a real starting for a Latin soap opera on TV. The soundtrack fits the telenovela quite well, also complimenting the on-screen backdrops and drama that unfolds. The lack of voice acting does seem like a miss though, as I would have been much more invested into the story and characters hearing their performances instead of simply reading. And while it’s understandable, there are some ‘Spanglish’ words and phrases that I had to guess what they meant.

While visual novels don’t vary all too much outside of their stories, Destino Indomable’s unique telenovela show backdrop and unscripted scenes actually makes a lot of sense and is quite clever. While the lack of voice acting was a letdown, the over-the-top drama and slaps more than made up for it, and made for a memorable few hours with a dramatic Latin soap opera full of slaps.
