STAFF REVIEW of Cat Rescue Story (Xbox Series X)

Cat Rescue Story Box art It’s 2025, a new year, but what isn’t new is my love of cozy games. Nacon’s Cat Rescue Story aims to satisfy that love of cozy games while allowing you to have a house full of cats to take care of as well.

The plot is a simple one. Your great aunt Olivia has left you her old house, but as you arrive you find a mysterious moving box on your front step. You then find out that Olivia used to take care of stray cats, meaning that you do too now. You can choose a name for your new cat, or use the randomly generated name option, and you’re ready to begin your new life of taking in, caring for, and eventually adopting out your new feline friends.

There really isn’t much to the story. You will meet a variety of characters to fill in some of the story for you and provide you with challenges to move the narrative along. You are able to have four cats at each 'station' in the home before having to expand, each requiring food, water and litter that needs to be replenished on different intervals depending on the quality used.

Your main tasks are to fill up each of the four ‘meters’ for each cat so that it can be adopted out. These are Health, Grooming, Hunger and Playtime related. Each task has their own ’mini game’ of sorts where you’ll either have the cat chase mice through the home, provide medical treatment, or grooming to the cats. Although cute at first, these become repetitive very quickly, especially since there are only a few in each category, and almost all require the same movements, normally rotating the controller stick.

The playtime game is a little more fun as you use a top-down perspective of your cat running though the home. Not only repetitive, but the cursor movement also isn’t exactly accurate, so it sometimes takes a while to figure out the spot needed for grooming for example. There are some shortcuts for each of the parameters, as you can give them specific treats to fill the meters, but these are expensive and earning coins is a terribly slow process. It was very evident that Cat Rescue Story was originally a mobile game.

The graphics are quite basic, another nod to its mobile roots. The cats are animated well, but are mostly identical except for colour, across the 50 breeds you can collect. Other than the basic care of cats, you will also clean and maintain the house and surrounding yard. This is how you expand your cat rescue operation. The choices are minimal, and you can’t choose your placement of items. I wish this content had more to it. The building and expansion require token earned through adopting the cats out to prospective owners.

Scrolling through the owners available, you can choose the best fit for your available cats. Each owner has their own requirements (as to colour, sex, and personality traits etc.) and rewards you according to how well they match up. Personality traits are discovered though taking care of the cat's needs and interacting with them. Some are found quickly; others will take more time to discover. Even though this was another simple mechanic, there was something heartwarming about making sure the cats in your care made their way to their fur-ever home.

Music and sound effects were serviceable, but nothing that really stood out to me.

Although the game was cute, I found myself bored quickly. The repetitive nature of how to care for your furry friends needed more variety and I found myself dreading some of the tasks. I could see this working better as a mobile game where it could be picked up in smaller intervals.

All in all, Cat Rescue story was cute, and the adoptions were a heart warming and best part for me. Far from Purr-fect, but fun for cat lovers for a few hours.
