Just Crow Things Box art Love them or hate them, everyone seems to have an opinion of crows. Whether you see them as resourceful or a nuisance, you can’t help but recognize their curious nature. When I saw there was a game about a little crow doing “just crow things” I knew I had to play it. Although slightly reminiscent of Untitled Goose Game, it does a decent job of setting itself apart by having a variety of levels with various tasks, some fun, and some evil.

Just Crowe Things is a 3D semi-open world game developed by Unbound Creations LLC, full of slapstick humour and poop jokes. If you are not a fan, you will likely not enjoy this game.

Starting off in the ‘tutorial’ level, your 32-year-old Gradma tells you to swoop down from the nest and find something you like and bring it back. First thing I saw was a radio, but this didn’t please her, turns out she was looking for a pair of glasses. So although it led me to believe I could bring back anything, but that really wasn’t the case. Also in this level you'll learn to fly, swoop and poop. Basically the trifecta of mechanics in the game. After turning in the glasses to Grandma, I was rewarded with my own pair and told to go speak to other animals to learn more of the crow ways. Shiny circles indicate the locations you are to travel to, and my first animal interaction was with Pony Hawk (half pony, half hawk), who teaches me to swoop properly. You can tell immediately that Just Crow Things is full of puns. After a few attempts, more than I care to admit, I passed the obstacle course. After meeting the rest of the animal teachers I am rewarded with knowledge of new skills and learning that I can replenish my poops by eating fruits.

My next mission is to find “Hoomans” to poop on. I have no idea how I feel about this in reality, but it is quite amusing. Use your shadow on the ground to line up your target and... bombs away. I also determine that consuming specific foods can give me special pooping powers. Chilis will give me fiery poop to light things ablaze and coffee will give me infinite poops.

Now that you’ve made your way through the tutorial the real story starts. A cutscene shows you a murder (technical name for a group of crows) of gangster crows. I’m being bullied and they take my glasses. Obviously, it’s my mission to get them back.

As you move through 10 levels, you earn “Crowputation” from helping animals and completing races. You can also find items to “Crowstomize” your look. New hats, skins and scarves are available. You can even customize how you sound. After earning 100 Crowputation you can move on to the next level.

Throughout the game you will be given different items needed to complete tasks, including a camera, a leaf blower, and even a blowtorch. You will have tasks to complete like hitting people with baseball bats, finding items with a metal detector, and my favourite, ruining a child’s birthday party. And let’s not forget pooping, always pooping. It’s an important mechanic not only in tasks but also in the races.

Tasks are easily trackable and disappear as you complete them. This is nice for those among us that are completionists. Also, as a completionist it can be frustrating as there is A LOT of things to collect in Just Crow Things.

I love that while looking at scenes between zones you get cute facts about crows. How they will remember faces and treat people kindly or poorly depending on how they’ve been treated for example. Or how they will work to distract other animals in order to steal their meals from them.

One problem I have with the game is that after I spoke to a character and pick up the missions, I can’t speak to them again if I didn’t quite catch what they said to me. This is unfortunate as someone who sometimes presses buttons too fast and misses dialogue.

Cute graphics and great level design kept me engaged throughout. Each of the 10 levels felt unique and creative. The dialogue of characters was short and sweet. Upbeat music kept up with the silly game play and strange sound effects of screaming humans, honking cars, etc. I didn’t run into any issues with the gameplay mechanics, finding it easy to fly, swoop, and poop. Everything was mapped out really well on controller.

While the story isn’t particularly strong, you don’t really play a game like this for the story. Like Untitled Goose Game, you play to live you best obnoxious life.

Just Crow Things is a silly game full of mindless tasks wrapped up in potty humour. It’s nothing to be taken seriously and that’s a really wonderful thing. It’s not complicated mechanically, and I think it would be a lot of fun for players of all ages. While the gameplay can be a bit repetitive and the humour rather juvenile, I had a lot of fun with the game and it’s an easy recommendation from me.
