STAFF REVIEW of Blood Bowl 3 (Xbox One)

Blood Bowl 3 Box art Coming from Cyanide Studios and Nacon is a tabletop experience, Blood Bowl 3 - the latest rendition of the murderously violent parody of American Football board game made by Game Workshop set in the Warhammer universe. It is a violent turn-based game of football where the stakes are high since at any point your players can be killed or injured throughout the rest of the game, complete with all the Orcs, Elves, Skavens and Humans you would expect to come from that. Fans of the Blood Bowl series have been waiting long for this since its announcement in 2020.

Even though it's been around three years since the announcement, the launch was horrendous. Most of the matches I played had bugs ranging from the AI players not moving during a turn or moving between the same two squares with one player during their entire turn. Some of these glitches can be game-breaking causing you to close out the game and restart the match.

With all that said, Blood Bowl 3 starts off with you doing the tutorial, which wasn't that good at even explaining its core principles and mechanics. I finished the tutorial feeling more confused than I did before. Other than teaching the basics on movement and the dice-rolling RNG system, I had no idea how best to play or strategize. The UI of the tutorial was often in the way with big text boxes littering the screen with controls and what to do. The UI was off and messy overall, especially in the main menu. Nothing in the main menu felt proper, with features hidden behind what felt like random menus.

The controls felt 'off' a lot of the time with there being unresponsiveness sometimes including the in-game cursor going places on its own or not selecting a player. Admittedly they have a road map featuring fixes for some of these and have already released patches. Having fixes like the ability to pick up a match after disconnection be featured in a roadmap doesn’t sit right since this and other features should have been in the game at launch. The core turn-based board game-like gameplay is fun, but that's when it works.

The dice rolls on tackles can result in a serious injury. A dice roll can be the difference between winning the game at the last minute or losing. Although that can be frustrating since failing to run past someone because of a dice roll can result in a turnover to the other team. Serious injuries carry from match to match giving you a sense of dread every time a player gets a serious injury.

The teams all got more players in total and new races, so now teams add to five instead of the old three. It seemed as though the two new players on the teams were just copied from another team and put in there though. The players did not seem to have much variety though; let's say there are three orcs, all of which will be the same, which can lead to confusion when on the field.

The visuals overall are better than the previous games due to of the higher resolution textures, but the color felt more desaturated and the game had a weird grainy film look over it. The audio was passable, as the crowd chants were not bad and the announcer had some good and funny lines, although they did seem to repeat after a while.

Blood Bowl 3 was lackluster at launch due to many problems, but the core gameplay was solid and could be fun once you got past all of the issues that will hopefully be fixed shortly in the future with some patches. Most of the aforementioned issues can be patched later, but the version I played on felt like it did not change much from its prequel.
