STAFF REVIEW of Freshly Frosted (Xbox One)

Freshly Frosted Box art Who doesn’t like a good donut? I know I’m a huge fan of donuts. Krispy Kreme is on the top of my list! Do you know what else is on the top of my list? Freshly Frosted from the brilliant minds of Quantum Astrophysicists Guild. I know, I know, it’s mouthful. But trust me, the proof is right here before you. Now, I’ve never heard of the Quantum Astrophysicists Guild, but after playing Freshly Frosted, now I want to tell you all about all the crumbs and goodies that will be in store for you in every box.

Becoming a Donut Queen (or King):

Congratulations! You've been handed a donut empire on a silver platter! Freshly Frosted and your vocal guide coaching you along the way of learning the ropes will ensure you’ll become successful. From level one you learn about delivery conveyors, the starting conveyors and the main mechanic which is ensuring your conveyors have a start and end point no matter what. Trust me, I had thought that life was great until Box 3. The main goal is to set the conveyors properly so that the correct donut gets the correct toppings and gets delivered to the right delivery conveyor. It sounds easy, right? I won’t say things went downhill, but they definitely got increasingly more difficult as you progress through the 12 available “boxes” which have 12 levels (to signify a dozen donuts) for you to complete. I don’t know about you, but that’s A LOT of donut making.

Frosting, Sprinkles, Whipped Cream, Cherries & Repeat:

Through your time with Freshly Frosted you will learn this process very well. This is the secondary concept outside of ensuring your starting conveyor meets with your delivery conveyor. You could have everything in a place that you feel is well built and flowing until you hear your guide tell you something is missing. Now, Freshly Frosted goes easy on you for a few boxes and then you get into more complicated patterns and pathways you must coordinate. That may look like having your conveyors all on one side while the topping stations are on the opposite portion of the area. There is a lot of problem solving, trial and error, and figuring out to be done in the levels. Some of the topping stations are all over the place and you may have to zig and zag to get your conveyor to go to the delivery conveyor. There isn't much in terms of changing the dynamics of the levels minus the environment changes.

Exciting Environment to make some donuts!:

I'm not going to lie to you, I'm not a devoted donut enthusiast, but what I love about Freshly Frosted is the upbeat vibrant colors and there’s proof that Quantum Astrophysicists Guild knows a thing or two about making a good video game. I enjoy always feeling motivated to want to complete another level, not sure what is in the next level and the next box. The only thing environment-wise I will mention is that it’s very much the same kind of idea from start to finish. Start at one end, complete the different donuts you need and get to the delivery counter without impacting the other conveyor lines, so not much variety outside of the core gameplay.

I don’t want to be a sour donut...:

Unless you are one of those gamers that love games that are predictable and have the same base mechanics level after level, I feel like some may not enjoy how quickly the difficulty ramps up. I will be honest; I did not finish all the boxes. I did my best to get through as much as possible to tbe best of my ability. The hint tips were slightly helpful, but on some levels I feel like they could have given more description. Most of the hints simply contained a few correct conveyor spot placements. Sometimes I continued with their hints and other times I sat there wondering where I was supposed to go. As motivated as I am when doing puzzle titles, I expect to be given hints that will help me progress, not cause me more confusion. This to me isn’t a deal breaker but definitely the only real glaring issue of Freshly Frosted that I can see.

All good things must come to an end!:

Hints and repetition aside, Freshly Frosted is a welcome addition to the puzzle genre on Xbox. I love a good donut and I love a good challenge. I swear I will be chanting “Frosting, Sprinkles, Whipped Cream, Cherries” in my sleep for the next couple weeks. From moving box to box, going from making one type of donut to four or five different donuts with four diverse types of toppings, it’s a fun adventure for someone who wants the challenge handling multiple conveyors going all over the place and delivering sweet goods. I am very eager to see what Quantum Astrophysics Guild has to offer in the future because if it is anything like this sweet delight, I want in on the goodness it offers!
