STAFF REVIEW of Youtubers Life 2 (Xbox One)

Youtubers Life 2 Box art I never thought the day would come that I could finally become the NewTuber I’ve always wanted to be! I can sit in my bedroom, eat snacks all day, record vlogs and interviews, play video games and make a TON of money! One can dream, can’t we? When I first saw YouTubers Life 2 and saw the trailer... Many things came to mind. A few of them being, "You can’t be serious?", "Who would play this kind of a game?" and "There’s so much to do!". I found the trailer to be very energetic, bright, colorful and made the game seem as though you were going to have a blast with it from beginning to end. I can’t say completely agree that I had a 'blast' with YouTubers Life 2, but I can say it was a good time for a short while. As they say, "We're here for a good time, not a long time.".

The story begins with you meeting Xavier, your 'guide' through gameplay. He’s going to teach you the very basic ins and outs of how NewTube City works. Only the best of the best YouTuber’s live in NewTube City and is proclaimed as the best place to build your career as a YouTuber. Xavier will teach you how to record your first video, create your own NewTube channel and you’re pretty much good to go. There are 28 days in a month, so you have Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter as your seasons. As you walk about NewTube City and learn your environment, I get a huge Pokémon Sword/Shield vibe but sharper colors and graphics.

Most of your time in NewTube City will be walking around the city. I’m not even close to kidding. Need to bring a package to a location? It’s all the way across town! Need to take a picture or host an interview? It’s all the way on the opposite side of the town! Need to get cash for more games and such so you can build your NewTube career? Walk across town again! The amount of walking in YouTubers Life 2 makes me question what the whole point of this game really is.

One of the key ideas of YouTubers Life 2 is the idea of building your NewTube channel and becoming successful. I figured this would be a piece of cake. Record some videos, interview some folks and play some video games... BOOM, stardom! Well, it didn’t exactly work out that way. There is one way that you can make your money so you can buy new video games and consoles along with computer upgrades. You can run errands for folks around town, though most of the time you’ll simply be taking a package from point A to B. Completing the task is easy, however, you probably won’t get another errand for a few days. Thus, earning money is somewhat difficult. You’ll go a few days at a time without anything to really do. Sure, you can record videos and interviews, but that takes stamina. How do you regain your stamina back? Buying food and eating food. If you have no money for food, you are left to go to bed and wait until the next day. You could pull an all-nighter and not be able to gain 100% of your energy back too, so you have some decisions to make along the way.

A side quest you’ll have is to take a picture of someone or at a certain location. How do you ask? That’s a question I’m still trying to answer. Of all the quests, minus the main one I’ll get into in a bit, the InstaLife challenge that required pictures in specific locations and/or specific people I think was a bit of a letdown. You’ll be at the location or with a specific person, I’d take the picture, and nothing would happen. The quest wouldn’t clear and it would leave me puzzled. I tried a few different ways and ultimately got a little frustrated. I’m a completionist at heart and want all the side quests complete. I want all the little items and I don’t care how long I sit there to get it all done. YouTubers Life 2 was one of those games where I got more frustrated as I played.

The main quests are rather straightforward up to the one that I couldn’t exactly understand. It was the one where I had to get enough cash to get a ticket for the big event in NewTube City (kind of like E3 or TwitchCon), the problem I had that I mentioned earlier was I didn’t have enough money. I couldn’t earn enough because there weren’t a lot of opportunities to get paid. So the day I was supposed to get into this building and get my ticket, nothing happened. I mean literally nothing. I went a couple days of going to sleep and I would wake up with the same quest on the screen even though the deadline for the quest had been timed out. There weren’t any more side quests either. It stalled on that quest, and that quest alone.

Recording videos and interviews is quite simple. You must follow the prompts on the screen, then you get rated based on how you recorded, your gaming and editing. You earn a small amount of money and likes and dislikes on your channel as well. By far, this part was the most consistent in performance and was simple enough where it wasn’t too difficult.

The other quirky part about YouTubers Life 2 I found a little odd was the day and night cycle during gameplay. Basically, the time would pass in fifteen minute intervals. If you have ever played Stardew Valley, think of their day and night cycle. For all the walking you are going to be doing, I feel like they don’t give you enough time to explore, seemingly like 98% of the places you can’t walk into or do anything with. They are just there.

Aside from all the quest issues, I like the idea behind YouTubers Life 2. To me, it perceives itself as a fun and unique gaming experience, though feel like it’s not polished enough to where I’d spend a ton of time in it. While I've not played the first YouTuber’s Life, I think I’m going to find another place to live and move out of NewTube City.
