STAFF REVIEW of Monday Night Combat (Xbox 360 Arcade)

Monday Night Combat Box art MMMMMMM I love the smell of bacon in the morning... It smells like victory!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Monday Night Combat. Imagine (if you will) an Earth where mixed martial arts and Monday night football are not violent enough; where capitalism thrives and corporations sponsor death. Did I mention the bacon?

Monday Night Combat (referred to as MNC from here on) is a third person shooter XboxLive arcade release. It is the first and hopefully not last game developed by Uber Entertainment based in Kirkland, WA. To get the most enjoyment from this game I would suggest playing it with friends. MNC can be played alone but it's not nearly as fun as playing with teammates you can trust to get your back.

Online and split-screen are available as well. It's a class based game where you can choose a style of play that suits your needs. Along with the standard and heavy gunners you will find a medic, a sniper and my favorite; the assassin. Each class has it's own weapon load-out as well as specialized attacks. There are pros and cons with all 6 classes but for the most part they're well balanced. The more variety of classes your team has the better off it is.

During hellacious combat against other teams and their robot minions, you'll earn cold hard cash that you can use to upgrade your skills. I would also recommend spending some to build turrets to protect your Money Ball.

Oh yeah I guess I should mention the Money Ball, it is after-all what the game is all about when it's not about the bacon. Bacon is dropped by fallen enemies and when picked up it benefits you character.

"Bacon makes you better at everything. Just like real bacon!" - Uber's MNC FAQ.

There are two core gameplay modes the first is "Blitz" where you protect your Money Ball from waves of attacking robots. I played split-screen with a friend and it seemed to increase the difficulty level. The second mode is called "Crossfire"; to quote Anikin Skywalker: "Here's where the fun begins." Crossfire is a team based 6 on 6 death match, where you try to destroy the other team's Money Ball while protecting your own. To damage the Money Ball you need to bring down its shields, as normal weapons can not harm it while the shields are active. This is where spending money on turrets and robots comes in handy.

MNC is vibrant and colourful. Instead of opting for a hyper-realistic look the designers went with cartoon style graphics which serve the game well. The Unreal engine also shines for the most part with very polished textures. Although it did nothing to impede my enjoyment I did see an occasional glitch here and there.

This part of MNC left me wanting. Maybe it's just my personal taste, but the background music just seemed like they threw something in and forgot to replace it with something decent. If I could find the announcer in this game I swear I would use my last bullet to end his repetitive, dismal life (he is THAT annoying). Your best bet is to go with your own MP3 player and some of your favorite tunes.

As a single player game I'm not sure I would recommend it, Just sayin'. That being said MNC is a quirky, fun Multi-player Arcade title; and considering a movie costs twice as much and only lasts a couple of hours, this game is well worth the 1200 MS points. If the gamers out there picked up on it and made it a regular Monday night event I could see this game lasting a long time.

P.S. MMMMMM Bacon!
