STAFF REVIEW of Hidden Through Time 2: Discovery (Xbox Series X)

Hidden Through Time 2: Discovery Box art Hidden Through Time: Myths and Magic launched on Xbox in January 2024, and I enjoyed every moment while reviewing it. When I was offered the opportunity to review Hidden Through Time 2: Discovery I assumed it was DLC for the Myths and Magic game, but it is a whole new game from Rogueside. Priced at a very reasonable $10.99 USD ($13.99 CDN), it gives you three new ‘stories’ that unfold as you find the hidden objects in them. If you’ve played the earlier games or any sort of search and find game, you’ll understand the gameplay mechanics of Hidden Through Time 2: Discovery.

It's simplistic and relaxing. An environment full of cute characters (human and non-human), full of visual gags and Easter Eggs made the time pass quickly. Many times I chuckled to myself when seeing a pop culture reference like a Weeping Angel from Doctor Who or a nod to another TV show, game, or movie. Almost every item you click on gives you some sort of animation or audio meaning you can spend time exploring and clicking to your heart's content. Some of the items you are looking for are out in the open while others may be in containers or even caves or cupboards.

Like previous games, some items can only be found during certain times of day or weather conditions. Each map has a maximum of two options like day/night, sunshine/rain, etc. A simple click of a button toggles between the two options. As you toggle between cycles you will see differences in the maps too, like people taking shelter from the rain, or people playing in the park during the daytime but asleep in the evening. Small details but I enjoyed seeing them. The attention to detail from the developers is evident.

Each of the 3 campaigns (Noir, Victorian and Science Fiction) has its own story which unfolds over 11 maps for each. One thing missing in Hidden Through Time 2: Discovery that was in the Myths and Magic game is bonus levels and secret items to find. I liked searching for those and was a little disappointed they weren’t in this follow up.

The animation, graphics and audio were delightful and similar to what I was expecting after playing Myths and Magic. It did not disappoint. The soundtrack is relaxing which is perfect when playing this style of game as well.

After you complete the Campaign mode, you can venture into the Architect mode where you can create and upload your own maps or download and play those that others have created. Make sure you rate them after playing them to get a few achievements. I was surprised how much content was available in this mode. You can pick themes and there are many items to choose from. I am not the most creative person, so I didn’t spend much time there.

While I wish there was more content in Hidden Through Time 2: Discovery, and it felt like a DLC rather than a full game, the price is fair for the content and time I spent with it. For anyone who likes cozy puzzle-like games, it’s an easy one to recommend.
